Official: HTC will no longer be locking bootloaders on their devices!

Yesterday, when we informed you that HTC would be taking another look at their bootloader policy, we were a bit doubtful that any decisions on the matter would be made any time soon.  However, we are pleased to announce that HTC’s Peter Chou has announced on their Facebook page that locked bootloaders on HTC’s phone will be a thing of the past.

‎”There has been overwhelmingly customer feedback that people want access to open bootloaders on HTC phones. I want you to know that we’ve listened. Today, I’m confirming we will no longer be locking the bootloaders on our devices. Thanks for your passion, support and patience,” Peter Chou, CEO of HTC

We’re not sure what this means for the launch of the HTC Sensation 4G on T-Mobile, but we’re ecstatic that HTC has listened to the massive public outcry and acknowledging that they actually care about what their customers want.  We’ll be bringing you more details if any arise, but we hope every one of you is able to enjoy your unlocked bootloaders on all your future HTC phones!

  1. I hope they unlock older phones like the HTC Desire S as well as new phones. Good news all around though. HTC have put faith back into there customers. Well done 🙂

  2. Keep in mind that an unlocked bootloader is much different than an unlocked phone. We’re waiting to hear back from HTC to see what their new policy actually means, but our suspicion is that HTC’s phone will be exactly like they were before. The dev community will still need to find an exploit in order to root phones.
