HTC DISAGREES WITH APPLE’s Actions… ready to fight it out

Two weeks ago, HTC was hit with a law suit from Apple, claiming that HTC is infringing on 20 different patents related to the iPhone and mobile computing.  It’s no secret that HTC is one of Apple’s biggest threats to the iPhone market with its Windows Mobile and Android lineups.  HTC may not be the biggest player in the market by any means, but their innovation and “first to market” approach over the past decade has been the key factor in the growing adoption of the smartphone across the globe.

Since news of the law suit broke, HTC has been pretty silent on the matter.  The most we have heard from them were short statements about how HTC is an innovative company and that they would stand behind that innovation.  Today, HTC has finally issued a formal response to Apple’s action and that “HTC disagrees with Apple’s decision and would like to reiterate their commitment to innovation.”  Unlike the the Apple versus Nokia situation, it does not appear that HTC will be pointing the finger back at Apple and slapping them on the wrist with a law suit of their own.  But it does sound like HTC will not simply stand by and let Apple push them around.  If they want a fight, that’s what they are going to get.

HTC disagrees with Apple’s actions and will fully defend itself. HTC strongly advocates intellectual property protection and will continue to respect other innovators and their technologies as we have always done, but we will continue to embrace competition through our own innovation as a healthy way for consumers to get the best mobile experience possible. From day one, HTC has focused on creating cutting-edge innovations that deliver unique value for people looking for a smartphone. In 1999 we started designing the XDA

The O2 XDA by HTC was the first 3.5-inch color touch screen smartphone in the world in 2002. and T-Mobile Pocket PC Phone Edition The T-Mobile Pocket PC Phone Edition by HTC was the first 3.5-inch color touch screen smartphone in the United States in 2002., our first touch-screen smartphones, and they both shipped in 2002 with more than 50 additional HTC smartphone models shipping since then.

Most people, who hear the HTC name, still have no idea who they are or how they have contributed to the smartphone market over the years.  Here’s a short list of several of their accomplishments over the past 12 years.

  • First Windows PDA (1998)
  • First Windows Phone (June 2002)
  • First 3G CDMA EVDO smartphone (October 2005)
  • First gesture-based smartphone (June 2007)
  • First Google Android smartphone (October 2008)
  • First 4G WIMAX smartphone (November 2008)

We’ll be sure to hear a lot more about the Apple versus HTC law suit over the next few months and years.  Cases like these typically get settled out of court, but HTC will be sure to challenge the validity of every patent that Apple is waiving in their face.
