Microsoft stops paying data charges on non-Windows Mobile phones

Earlier this year, Microsoft announced that they were going to eliminate nearly 5,000 jobs in an effort to cut costs. At the time, they also noted that many employee perks would be cut back as well. This week, Microsoft has announced that their employees will no longer be reimbursed for their data charges on phones that do not run Windows Mobile.

Employees at Microsoft have been enjoying their free data perks for quite some time. But now that the Palm Pre, Apple iPhone, BlackBerry Storm, and T-Mobile G1 have invaded their smartphone turf, the company is fighting back. I’d imagine that most Microsoft employees are using their data privileges for work purpose, but I’m not sure that those using other smartphones will be too enthusiastic to pick up a new Windows Mobile handset just to keep their free data.

Would you be willing to switch phone or mobile OS if someone told you they would take care of the data charges for you?
