Sense 5 might come to HTC One S, One X, One X+, and Butterfly

When the HTC One debuted last week in New York and London you may have noticed the user interface looked a lot different than previous HTC Android phones like the HTC One X or Droid DNA.According to a reply on Facebook from this HTC page the mobile manufacturer plans to add the functional features of the new user experience to several models currently on the market across the globe.

A fan simply asked HTC this:

The new sense 5 will come to htc one x?

And the response was more than we expected.

HTC will be offering upgrades to some of its existing devices in the next few months, including global variants of HTC One X, One X+, One S and the HTC Butterfly. Also, note that some features enabled by the new HTC One hardware will not be available in the software updates.

While we cannot exactly determine at this point which phones are guaranteed an update, if any will see the latest HTC software or how soon, but it feels pretty exciting to see HTC go out on a limb to let fans know a plan is in the works. Those of us waiting for a Jelly Bean update with Sense 4+ have had our eyes peeled since the end of December, but no matter how often we check-in to the software update service and get that ‘your phone is up to date’ message most of all will try again the next day. If you are thinking along the same lines as us and the source too you will notice the response does not specify the phones mentioned would be getting an update to Sense 5, but just says these models are expecting updates over the next few months. The comment about the update excluding features that only the HTC One hardware can currently support does draw the reader back in to believe we are looking at a valid reply about the latest user interface.

We are sure the visual enhancements like the new Sense clock and Blinkfeed will transition to older devices, but Zoe is questionable and the IR remote control app is out of the running. Also, you might remember that we caught news of an HTC Droid DNA taking Sense 5 for a spin so this is something we could see sooner than later.

  1. HTC Reply “The information about the HTC One S having two different processors is correct, but it still falls under the same model. This means that, no matter what processor, the HTC One S will not receive further Android OS updates and will remain on the current version of Android and HTC Sense.”
