HTC U11+ officially unveiled – the U11 we’ve all been waiting for

The long-awaited HTC U11+ has arrived! The phone was just unveiled at HTC’s headquarters in Taiwan with not a whole lot of fanfare. Members of the press were there, but it wasn’t as big of an event as the launch of the HTC U11 was earlier this year.

Fortunately, what HTC unveiled is quite exciting! The HTC U11+ lives up to all the rumored and leaks. Well… except for one. Despite that massive coil that can be seen through the back of the phone in the Translucent Black color option, the U11+ does not have wireless charging.

You should have the U11+’s specs memorized by now, but here are the highlights. The phone is running on a Snapdragon 835 from Qualcomm with the option to choose 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage or 6GB of RAM with 128GB of storage. The new 6-inch QHD+ display is DCI-P3 compliant and supports HDR10 video playback. Its 18:9 aspect ratio allows the display to take up a lot more real estate on the front of the phone without increasing its footprint too much. In the end, the HTC U11+ is not as wide as the U11 was, but it is 4.5mm taller. But that little bit of extra room means that HTC was able to squeeze in a 3940 mAh battery. That’s a full is 30% larger than the U11’s battery, so there’s little chance that a you’ll be able to kill the phone in a single day unless you’re actually trying to.

HTC has given the BoomSound speakers a boost by bumping up the max volume by 30% when compared to the U11. Naturally, the phone comes with HTC’s USonic noise canceling headphones which connect over USB C. That also means that there’s no 3.5mm headphone jack to be found.

As for the design, the edge-to-edge display dominates the front of the phone, but the sides of the U11+ are made from a single piece of aluminum. The back has the same liquid surface finish as we saw on the HTC U11, but HTC has introduced a new Translucent Black color option which gives you a subtle glimpse at the phone’s interior components through the back panel.

More HTC U11+ coverage

The optics on the U11+ appear to be updated as well. The main 12M sensor is paired with an f/1.7 aperture lens with phase detect autofocus, OIS and a dual-LED flash. On the camera’s software side, HTC has switched out the HDR Auto mode from the U11 with a new HDR Boost mode which allows the phone to capture more vivid color while also improving its dynamic range sensitivity. The feature is also available on the front-facing 8MP camera which is paired with an f/2.0 lens.

Overall, the HTC U11+ look to be a decent upgrade when compared to the HTC U11. Let us know what you think of the new phone and if you’re planning on buying it.

  1. Very nice, but looks very “fat” – not at all what I’d call a slim phone. OK, it’s just a mm more than the competition but look at the view from top/bottom.
