24 hours with the HTC U11+

My HTC U11+ review is in the works, but rather than have you wait 4-5 days for that, I thought I’d give you guys some insight into how the phone’s been treating me after 24 hours.

Software: The phone is running on Android Oreo 8.0 with HTC Sense which has a new launcher. You can swipe up anywhere on the home screen to open the app drawer or swipe down to open the notification shade. It even uses Google’s new custom-shape icon backgrounds.

Like the U11 and the Pixel 2 phones, you can squeeze the sides of the device to launch a custom action. The new feature is the Edge Launcher feature which gives you a sliding app and shortcut carousel which can be customized. HTC’s done a good job on the design, but I’m not entirely convinced that it’s more convenience than just opening the app drawer.

HTC’s also brought back on-screen nav buttons. The layout can be customized and HTC’s also added a second panel of buttons which can be accessed with a simple swipe.

Display: As you might expect, the highlight of the U11+ is its display. The 6-inch, 18:9 LCD 5 panel is quite bright and can be seen outdoors with no issues. The brightness can also be turned down extremely low – much lower than the U11 and the Samsung Galaxy S8 can – making it perfect for nighttime reading in bed.

Performance: Overall, performance is on par with other devices using a Snapdragon 835 and 4GB of RAM. Don’t expect this to be faster than the Galaxy S8 or the Pixel 2, but it’s not any slower either. I’ll be doing my usual speed tests to see exactly how the U11+ matches up against its competitors.

Camera: The overall camera performance after a day is quite impressive. I highly recommend checking out our HTC U11+ camera test to see how it performs. The sensor is the same one used on the HTC U11, but it has an upgraded f/1.7 lens and the front-facing camera has a higher quality 8MP sensor rather than the 16MP one used on the U11. I’d say that image quality is slightly better than the U11’s. There’s a chance that it’s just as good as the Pixel 2’s camera, but more testing is needed before I can give a more authoritative answer on that.

Battery: one day’s use is definitely not enough time to make a definitive statement about battery life, but I will say that I took the phone off the charger 28 hours ago with a 100% charge and right now it’s sitting here with 12% battery left – and that’s with more than 6 hours of screen on time.
