After HTC announced a temporary halt to trading of the company’s stock for tomorrow, Evan Blass has shared that the rumored deal between HTC and Google will be shared with HTC employees tomorrow at a company townhall. The exact details of the deal are still a mystery, but Evan’s second Tweet mentioned that Google will be acquiring specific hardware engineering assets from HTC and that the “HTC” brand will remain intact.
HTC was contracted by Google to build its Pixel phones last year and this year’s Pixel is rumored to be built by HTC as well. While the Pixel hasn’t been a huge success, numbers have shown that it was more popular than any HTC-branded smartphone of 2016. What we don’t understand is what Google is planning on doing with HTC’s smartphone business.

Yes, Google could very easily ramp up production for 2017 and deliver a lot more Pixel phones to satisfy consumer demand this time around, but HTC’s manufacturing capacity great exceeds the estimates 2 million Pixel units which have sold since the phone made its debut nearly a year ago. From what we can gather, HTC’s assembly lines can still manage to push out 5 million units in any given quarter. For reference, that number is significantly lower than the 13.2 million units HTC manufactured in Q3 of 2011.
Hopefully, we’ll know a lot more about the Google/HTC deal by this time tomorrow. What are you hoping the final outcome will be?
HTC have produced a beautifully designed phone in the U11 this year.
lf the rumours are true, I hope they continue to produce smartphones under the HTC brand name and honour the warranties on those phones still under warranty.
Just an addendum, HTC smartphones have a large fan base in various forms such as HTC Champions, HTC Elevate, etc and it would be a shame to see these dissolved.
Hopefully, if the rumours are true, Google will come forward quickly and let members where they stand!
