No, HTC doesn’t want to put ads in your phone’s keyboard

HTC can’t seem to catch a break. A few days ago, an update to TouchPal (the third-party keyboard which is used on HTC’s newest smartphones) started showing banner ads for a handful of HTC 10 owners. While HTC has resorted to showing ads in BlinkFeed and even using its Themes app to promote a new movie release from time to time, the ads in TouchPal were not on HTC’s monetization roadmap.

As soon as the news broke that the ads were showing up, HTC released statement, promising to reolve the issue as quickly s possible.

“Due to an error, some HTC customers have reported seeing ads on their phone’s keyboard. This is absolutely not the experience we intended, and we’re working to immediately fix the error and remove the ads as quickly as possible.”

We have not noticed the ads on our HTC 10, so we have no way of verifying that TouchPal and HTC have worked things out yet to remove them. HTC’s momentum has been picking up since the launch of the HTC U11, but an issue like this can easily put HTC at the top of people’s “don’t buy” list. The good news is that this fisco has not affected the U11 and we’re hoping we don’t hear any reports of the ads showing up on any other HTC smrtphones.

  1. I love my HTC 10, I hate TouchPal keyboard! What about HTC keeping it’s own keyboard instead of giving buyers something HTC isn’t sure they want (and actually can be downloaded latter)?…
I must use the TouchPal keyboard because I’m a t9 person (nowadays t9 alternatives are as bad as TouchPal).
Also, I’m not sure how trustworthy are non pre-installed keyboards…
Anyway, Sony had the best keyboards ever and they also changed to boatloader keyboards so i suppose money is killing the good (phone brand) keyboards…

  2. I am a long time HTC fan had nothin but HTC devices since the Evo. They are goin the wrong direction with this TouchPal keyboard crap. And a few other apps that are missing. Why HTC has let the phablet market pass them buy since 2013 with the Max blows my mind….All the bigger screen sales the other companies get you would think HTC developers would wake the hell up ! U11 with a 6″ screen ? Why not ?????
