HTC U11 selling better than the HTC 10, One M9

HTC U11 selling better than the HTC 10, One M9

During an HTC shareholder meeting, Chang Chia-lin, president of HTC’s smartphone and connected device division, revealed that the new HTC U11 is selling better than the HTC 10 and the HTC One M9. Sales have exceeded HTC’s expectations, leading to U11 being placed on back-order in several regions – including the US.

Review of the HTC U11 have been mostly positive – including ours. Some have criticized the phone for only having a 3,000 mAh battery and the traditional 16:9 aspect ration display when the new Samsung Galaxy S8 and LG G6 have 18:9 display. But those criticisms appear to be falling on deaf ears as consumers continue to buy the U11.

Hopefully HTC will will be able to build enough U11’s to meet consumer demand, leading to a profitable quarter and hopefully a profitable year for HTC. During the shareholder meeting, Chang reemphasized that HTC’s strategy has shifted form flooding the market with dozens of different devices in an effort to sell more units. Instead, HTC is only planning to release 3 to 4 profitable smartphone per calendar year.

Along with that, HTC will also be focusing its R&D efforts on 5G. HTC was the first to deliver 4G smartphones, resulting in HTC’s short-lived domination of the smartphone market. If they are able to capitalize on 5G in the same way, things could look a lot differently for the company by the time 2020 rolls around.
