SuperData: 420k HTC Vive units were sold in 2016

HTC hasn’t publicly announced how many HTC Vive VR units the company has sold since it launched last spring, but a new report from SuperData indicates that 420,000 units have been sold to date. Selling less than half a million units may sound like a huge disappointment so some, but SuperData shows that the HTC Vive has been extremely more popular than Facebook’s Oculus Rift. The report shows that only 250,000 Oculus Rift units have been picked up by consumers since launch.

That gives the HTC Vive a significant advantage over its main competitor!

With a 40% lead over the Oculus Rift, the HTC Vive is well positioned to extend its market dominance in 2017. There are plenty of games already available for the Vive and a new wave of releases are set for this spring.

What’s most surprising is that the HTC Vive has managed to outsell the Rift despite HTC’s limited marketing budget and higher price point. There are plenty of HTC Vive deals which include the VR system and a gaming computer to power the Vive, but it’s still quite expensive.

If HTC is able to cut the price of the HTC Vive by $100 sometime in 2017, we could be looking at 1.5-2 million units sold by this time next year.
