While recent pictures of the HTC Halfbeak smartwatch have been circling the web recently, Chialin Chang, HTC’s President of Smartphones and Connected Devices has stated that the company isn’t planning to release an Android Wear smartwatch anytime soon.
I can tell you that we’re not going to have an Android watch. I don’t think we’ve nailed it with [the experience of] watches. Android watch is one thing but even Apple as a big brand is declining [in watches.] We are not going to have a watch in the short term.
The statement appears pretty straightforward, but there are a few things we’d like to highlight. The way the statement is worded leaves HTC some wiggle room, especially since the rumored HTC Halfbeak smartwatch has been spotted with Under Armour branding. By saying that “we’re not going to have an Android watch,” Chang is implying that there will not be an Android watch with HTC’s name on it. The fitness-oriented devices that HTC and Under Armour have put out so far have prominently features the HTC logo beside the Under Armour logo, but thee agreement between the two could easily change, removing HTC’s logo entirely from an HTC-built smartwatch.
It wouldn’t be any different than the Google Pixel phones which are built by HTC.
As of now, there’s no evidence that HTC and Under Armour are planning to take this approach, but it’s certainly a possibility.

HTC (like many other companies) are constantly testing a number of items in the wild which may or may not ever get released. This is why leaks aren’t really a great deal of use. I know that in the past, HTC have said that they were trying out some Android Wear technology but found it didn’t meet their expectations for performance and user experience without being too big to wear. So they canned the idea. I guess they tried again for a while and decided nothing had changed.
Look at fitbit had theirs 5 minute and now if nothing life changing will go down.
If I would be camp trainer and change music while training then I would buy it. Otherwise set playlist on cheap.
