This HTC Desire 10 photo is a fake

Following yesterday’s revelation that an HTC Desire 10 is expected to come to market sometime in Q3, an image claiming to show off the back of the phone showed up on Weibo and has since been published on a handful of sites (motog, GSMArena). The image looks fairly convincing, depicting the same camera, flash and laser autofocus layout that was shared in a small image by Evan Blass, but there were a few things which looked a little suspicious. Since HTC’s desire phones typically do not feature metal in their exterior build, we were perplexed intrigued to notice the metal frame along the left edge of the Desire 10.

Upon closer inspection, the noticed a few characteristics which are not only similar but identical to those of the HTC 10. To verify if our hunch was correct, we opened up photoshop and proceeded to recreate the HTC Desire 10 image using the HTC 10 as the base phone. The results of our work can be viewed below. The image on the left is supposedly the HTC Desire 10 and the one on the right is our mockup. We used the Carbon Grey model and covered the back of the phone with a gray rectangle which features a 40px radius at its borders. We then slapped on the camera lens image shared by Evan. Below are the red flags which indicate that the image is a fake.

Fake HTC Desire 10

  1. Gold antenna line on the top doesn’t fully cover black antenna line of the HTC 10
  2. Chamferred metal corner is identical to that of the HTC 10
  3. 3.5mm port on HTC Desire 10 features same cutour as the HTC 10 despote a much shallower chamfer
  4. Side of the two phone is identical. This includes the color fade from dark to light to dark and button placement
  5. Gold antenna line on the bottom doesn’t fully cover black antenna line of the HTC 10

We know that people are desperate for attention these days, but we really wish they would put in a little more effort the next time they want to pass off a fake image as a leak.

Are there any other similarities between the two devices that we missed?

UPDATE: Our friends at Pocketnow did some more digging and found that the image was created the I Love HTC Thailand Facebook page. They used the body of the HTC One E9+ and overlayed it onto the HTC 10 to show what the Desire 10 could look like.

  1. On the fake, you can very clearly see the edges of where they pasted in Evan’s image. There’s definitely a seam there, and the artifacting levels around the camera are different from the rest of the back in that location.

  2. I actually like this fake leaked design. It’s a pretty cool concept phone just wish they labeled it a concept phone instead of a “leak”.

  3. They are releasing multiple Desires; they don’t need a low-level 10. Makes no sense from a marketing perspective. I know we’re talking HTC, but still.
