HTC loses HTC Vive marketing director to Magic Leap

HTC is still planning a limited launch of the HTC Vive before the end of the year, but the company will have to do it without its director of global marketing for its Connected Devices division, Jeff Gattis. While at HTC, Jeff Gattis was led the marketing efforts for HTC’s Virtual Reality, Wearables, Imaging and Connected Home products – all new categories which HTC is hoping will transform the company into a much digger player within the tech industry. Gattis was at HTC for only 16 months, coming in only a few months before the launch of the HTC RE. Jeff has taken a new position at Magic Leap, a Google-backed virtual reality company which raised more than $500 million in funding in 2014 alone.

Jeff Gattis sat down for an interview with UploadVR to talk about the move from HTC to Motion Leap. While he didn’t have anything negative to say about HTC or the Vive, Jeff’s comments on Motion Leap highlight how Motion Leap will have a much broader impact than the Vive’s current focus that’s geared exclusively towards gaming.

“I think what struck me so much about Magic Leap was the quality of the technology and seeing how far along it was. I knew there was a great vision but I didn’t know how far along the technology was and how close it is to becoming real and commercial,” he says. “That was the biggest takeaway for me, how it advanced and how quickly it has gotten to the point it is at now.”

The video below shows a demo which was recorded using Magic Leap technology. There’s no indication as to when we will see a commercial product from Magic Leap or how it will compare to HTC Vive, but it is exciting to see that the virtual reality industry is gearing up for massive assault on general consumer space.

  1. Looks big thing. Money money money and he moved to Google.

If HTC Vive has good product dont need marketing at all.

    1. Let’s hope that’s not the attitude that HTC will take with its new product. Valve will surely be pouring a lot of marketing dollars into the Vive, but HTC needs to as well if they want to emerge as a leased in the VR space. The Vive is considered to be the best VR experience so far, but that doesn’t mean anything if people don’t know about it.

      1. I meant viral marketing thing much better than anything can creat marketing department.

Is free and only for best product. Cannot be replicated. Its unique.

You had it on head and you infected?

Now everything goes quick like hot potato or snapdragon.

  2. I am getting pretty anxious to get the HTC Vive. Looking forward to read the first reviews but I believe that I will be one of the first adopters. ????
