Will your HTC phone be updated to Android 6.0?

HTC fans want to know when and if our awesome phones will get the latest Android update and HTC shared some exciting news with us today over the Twitter airwaves. Before we get to that here’s a quick update in the world of Google, they just announced the new Nexus lineup which will ship later in October with Android 6.0 code named Marshmallow and the rollout of the new OS for current Nexus devices is expected to begin next week.

So what does this mean for HTC? It means that HTC will be working hard to get some of your favorite devices updated with the latest version of Android; some before the end of 2015 and some into 2016. HTC says the OS update should be ready for the HTC One M9 and One M8 before the end of the year, but keep in mind those software builds need to be sent and approved by the carriers before they make it to your handset if it’s a locked device. Delivery to the user is hard to predict.

We’ll be roasting Marshmallows with cool new features and styling and also better enhancements to current features like battery life management! Curious about the process HTC follows to send new OS updates to your phone? Tap the graphic below to find out more.

Android Update Anatomy

HTC has promised customers that phones will get two major updates over the duration of two years from the phone’s release. This is what HTC, and US carriers, acknowledges as the phone’s average lifecycle. Having said that, not all phones have the hardware capable of keeping up with operating system requirements to run efficiently so there may be phones that don’t get updated. At this time, HTC may not have listed your device, but that doesn’t mean they won’t update it. HTC may determine the hardware runs the software better than anticipated and will decide to provide an update. I noticed fans asking on Twitter about the Desire Eye and even though it wasn’t listed HTC provided the response below:

The list of 12 HTC phones we know HTC has committed to update are as follows:

  • HTC One M9
  • HTC One M8
  • HTC One M9+
  • HTC One E9+
  • HTC One E9
  • HTC One ME
  • HTC One E8
  • HTC One M8 Eye
  • HTC Butterfly 3
  • HTC Desire 826
  • HTC Desire 820
  • HTC Desire 816
