HTC reminds us not all protection plans are created equal

If you’re purchased a smartphone in the past 3-5 years, you’re well aware that there a dozens of different protection plans that promise to protect you from exorbitant repair costs which often exceed the on-contract price of the phone. Your service provider typicality offers an insurance policy which can set you back $10-$20 per month, but some manufacturer do offer their own protection plans which promise limited protection in certain circumstances.

Based on what we’ve seen, HTC’s Uh-Oh protection (offered for free with every new purchase of the HTC One M9 and HTC One M8 purchased after March 10 2015) offer the most protection and doesn’t require any additional fees on your part. If you crack your screen, HTC will send you a new phone. If you drop your phone into the pool, HTC will send you a new phone. If you decide to switch service providers, HTC will send you a new phone. And the best one of all – if you don’t need HTC’s Uh-Oh protection in the first year, HTC will give you $100 off the purchase of your next HTC One.

In contrast, Samsung and Apple offer broken screen and water damage protection, but Samsung Protection Plus starts at $99 plus a $75 service fee every time you use it. Apple Care costs $99 as well and comes bundled with a $79 service fee when you use it. The newly announced LG G4 does come with a one-time free screen replacement, but the service is only valid for LG customers who live in Korea.

Yes, some phones may be a bit better than the HTC One M9, but Uh-Oh protection offers incredible peace of mind at no extra cost and $100 off of your next HTC One if you manage to make it through a full year with a pristine phone.
