Before and after: HTC One M9 camera update improves image quality

HTC has released a new software update for the HTC One M9 which promises to improve the images captured by the company’s new flagship phone. We played around with the camera last night, but we took it out for a real test run today and tried to replicate a handful of the images that we previously captured with the HTC One M9.

Overall, the HTC One M9 shows slight improvements. Low light performance is still a bit muddy for out taste, but HTC’s software team has been able to tweak the default camera settings to improve image sharpness and color tone. The issues that we pointed out in our HTC One M9 review are still there, but they are less noticeable. We’ll be playing around the camera a lot over the weekend and hope to have a more conclusive report by early next week.

Take a look at the images below to see how they compare before and after the update. Keep in mind, the comparison shots have been framed to match the previous images that we captured with the HTC One M9, but the lighting conditions may be slightly different.

Do you think the HTC One M9’s camera update is enough to compete with the Samsung Galaxy S6?

  1. Whether it’s an improvement or not, it is already too late. Media already concluded the phone camera sucks ass!

    1. Good thing the media also picked up on the curved screen quality issues with the S6 Edge and the camera flash problem on ththee S6. That will certainly have an effect on sales. Troll.

      1. I don’t think he’s trolling at all. HTC’s sales have been suffering and they needed the M9 to make a big splash in the media to turn things around. Right or wrong, those first reviews and the resulting luke-warm reception probably hurt their sales. It’s great that HTC is making improvements, but I don’t think those improvements will lead to a large change in general perception of the phone. So yeah, a lot of the damage is already done. And that’s too bad.

        1. I could give a crap about the media. Let’s be honest here, HTC revolutionized the coming of premium devices. All other manufacturers had to change there game plan because of HTC. No matter what the media says, the M9 is still a great phone and hands down still has the best design. What really makes me think of the media as a joke is. HTC had the best phone on the market last year with the M8. Sure the media praised the device. But what about Samsung?, what about the S5? That was a horrible device! The same device they put out year after year. They didn’t receive near the criticism that the M9 is receiving. Not to mention the S6 looks exactly like the 500 devices they been putting.g out for years. So why is it that only HTC is being torn apart for having the same look? Most of these tech sites are straight up hypocrites. Besides, most people don’t read reviews about phones. This is a world made up of followers. So what ever is the in thing, that’s what the next person will purchase. A hundred people could walk in a store and think the M9 is the best looking phone in there. Yet 95 will walk out with a iPhone or Samsung device, because that’s what everyone else has. Sad that people don’t strive to be different.

          1. Well said! I happen to agree with everything you said and will add that I own the M9 and absolutely love this phone. It’s fast as hell, looks sexy and let’s not forget that these devices were hand crafted which makes each one unique for that fact alone! I prefer to stand out in the crowd and this device certainly affords me this…
            Viva la ONE!

  2. I played around with the camera today post update and found that it just doesn’t have 20 megapixels of detail when cropping. The screens lack of decent calibration doesn’t help either. The m9 is undoubtedly a beautiful device, but htc should’ve gone the extra mile and worked harder at creating sufficient ois modules as well calibrating their screens. The battery life is perplexing as well. S808 may have worked out better. S810 on the m9 is so neutered that its basically a s805 . oh and it gets warm in a way that’s not bad, but its noticeable .

  3. Really like to see some photos taken with M9+. Fan of HTC duo cam setup. Sneaking suspicions M9 camera software was more for duo cam setup instead of the single main shooter.
    Cheers

  4. What is the software revision used on this test? I’m still running on version 1.32.401.15 if that’s any help.

  5. Worst hardware company

I had bought htc desire x and wifi/host-spot problem occurred within a year. I gave it to the service centre and they changed motherboard because in case of any hardware issue they have only one option which is replacement of motherboard. And when they changed motherboard of my phone then 3 and half months later camera stopped working first and then phone get dead within one month. So this is htc (Htc Third Class). And again they asked me to replacement of motherboard (what the f**k they people) and motherboard cost is near about Rs.7500/-. Even htc dosn’t trust on their hardware more that 3 months cause whenever they change motherboard they only gives an extended warrenty of only 3 months. Shame on you guys(htc team).

There are lot of smartphone companies are there having more features as compare with htc in less price.

  6. Htc m9 plus Primary camera sucks it gave me a hard time at night.Do something htc_/_

    1. I had the same issues, one quick advice: use RAW by night, if you like the preview you can delete the dng, and if you like you can tweak it more later on. For the record I’m also probably using a higher firmware (2.8.617.4 5.1 update) but I didn’t notice this post was way old 🙁 sorry

  7. Anyone else having problems with there camera since last update . My camera worked fine but now my main camera won’t work no option to switch to it or anythinv. Only have selfie camera option
