Android app of the week: HTC Fun Fit

Have you heard the news? HTC has a new app on the market and it’s called HTC Fun Fit. HTC’s latest app offers a fun way to track daily activities like walking and running while allowing you to keep up with your friends. Fun Fit debuted in the Play store over the weekend for smartphones from any manufacturer running Android 4.1 or later and will come pre-installed on the HTC One M9. The app is evolving at a quick pace having already received an update within the first week of release with changes we saw mentioned by users in the reviews section of the app page.

The Fun Fit app let’s you select goofy animal characters like a llama or a panda for an avatar and as of right now, let’s you sign on as a guest or with a Facebook account, but a response to a reviewer disappointed Fun Fit only supported the social network, Facebook read, “social integration is continually improving“. While I have used my Facebook account to sign in, I haven’t had any success finding friends through Fun Fit. The app runs in the background and keeps track of your active times throughout the day and lists how long you have been running or walking. I like that HTC Fun Fit is tracking the phone’s movement throughout the day, but due to the lack of cell or data signal where I work my HTC phone is mostly stationary during my most mobile hours of the day since my phone sits on my desk scanning for a piece of the carrier network. So the app is not tracking my movement as well as a wearable fitness band that is on my wrist all the time.

Even though HTC recently partnered with Under Armor and is using their UA Record app to transfer data from the upcoming HTC Re Grip, the introduction of an HTC flavored activity tracker on the phone is probably done to keep up with the growing population of interested health nuts out there that want to track everything with their phones using an out-of-the-box option.

The HTC Fun Fit app requests the following permissions from your phone:

Identity: -find accounts on the device
Location:  -approximate location (network based)
-precise location (GPS and network base)
Photos/Media/Files: -read the contents of your USB storage
-modify or delete the contents of your USB storage
WiFi Connection info: -view Wi-Fi connections
Device ID and call info: -ready phone status and identify
Other:  -receive data from internet
-full network access
-view network connections
-draw over other apps
-run at startup
-control vibration
-prevent device from sleeping
