HTC takes on the Moto G with the new HTC Desire 626

HTC has a new low-end Android smartphone which may turn out to be HTC’s most popular Desire handset of 2015 – the HTC Desire 626. The HTC Desire 626 is listed on HTC’s store for NT$5990 (roughly $190 USD), making it a direct competitor with the hugely successful Motorola Moto G which has dominated the low-cost budget Android segment for over a year. Fortunately, the HTC Desire 626 looks better than its competitor and its spec sheet should give it a competitive advantage.

HTC has equipped the Desire 626 with a 5-inch 720p display, quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 SoC, 1GB RAM, 16GB internal storage, microSD card expansion slot, 13 megapixel main camera with a BSI sensor, 5 megapixel front-facing camera, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.0 and LTE (bands 1, 3, 5, 7, 8 and 28) along with a 2,000 mAh battery. The HTC Desire 626 is currently running Android 4.4 with HTC Sense 6, but it should be updated to Android 5.0 with Sense 7 in the coming months.

For now, the HTC Desire 626 is only available in Taiwan, but we expect the phone to make its way to India, China and dozens of other markets across Asia and Europe in the near future.

    1. I don’t think 1GB is enough for Android 5.0. On my 2GB shield tablet with Android 5.0 System uses 850MB and apps 327MB. So you would need at least 1.5GB to avoid constantly loading apps from storage.

      1. Fortunately Lollipop is much better at loading apps from scratch than KitKat. I don’t see a big problem there since its a budget oriented entry phone.

        1. The speed of your phone is now limited by storage. So your phone will be iphone2007 speed. And don’t try to load more than one app because you’ll regret it.
But luckily we shaved off that $5 for that extra 1GB!
