Android app of the week: HTC Power To Give

HTC made a great move last year by adding several core applications like camera, lock screen, and video chat to the Google Play store making it easier to provide specific updates to users instead of trying to push software through the carrier’s hands first. One app we would like to tell you about this week doesn’t come pre-installed on any HTC phones, although it wouldn’t bother us if it did. Many of us like to use our phones to be productive so why not put it’s computing resources to work when you don’t need them.

This app lets your phone to contribute its unused processing resources to scientific, medical and other research projects around the world. Once the app is installed there are several projects you can get involved with like Rosetta@home, Yoyo@home, Asteroids@home, Einstein@home, SETI@home, and a few others. Most will require a few steps outside the app to get registered, but after you get through that part HTC Power To Give will download tasks that are really mini-equations that need to be solved and added as a piece to the “what is the meaning of life” puzzle. There are a couple of conditions which need to be met first, the phone needs to be connected to a wireless network and needs at least 90% battery life.

  1. Download HTC Power To Give
  2. Connect to Wi-Fi
  3. Charge the phone

The HTC Power To Give app is really that simple. You install it, set it up, and let it run when you don’t need your phone. The app interface will show you how much it has progressed while you were sleeping and will even show you how close it is to solving the equations your phone has been working on. If you have multiple devices you can most likely run the app on them. The app page in the Play store has a list of supported devices that even includes phones made by other manufacturers.

This week we kicked off something new, well not new to the internet, but fairly new around HTC Source as far as weekly columns are concerned. We’d love to hear your feedback, suggestions, and recommendations so we can turn this into something you will look forward to each week. What are some of your favorite apps that you use frequently? Share them in the comments below and if we use your recommended app as the App of the Week we’ll give you a shout out in the article.
