HTC to miss 90 day HTC One (M8), One (M7) Android 5.0 update target

Roughly 24 hours after we speculated that HTC would not meet it’s 90 day Android 5.0 update target for the HTC One (M8) and HTC One (M7), the company has announced that unexpected complications with the Lollipop build will push the release past the 90 days self-imposed deadline.

Mo Versi, Vice President of Product Management at HTC, explained:

Google has had to address several issues with this release. We’ve been diligently working to fix some of them on our end and incorporating Google’s fixes as quickly as possible, but despite everyone’s best efforts some carrier versions of the HTC One (M8) and HTC One (M7) will not meet our 90 day goal, which is February 1st. While we are committed to delivering within this time period, we are even more committed to ensuring these updates result in an even better experience with your device because that is what the updates are intended to do.

HTC has already released the Android 5.0 (Lollipop) update for Unlocked and Developer Editions of the HTC One (M8) in the US and the update is also available for Unlocked versions of the phone in Europe and a few carrier branded models in Canada. Unfortunately, HTC’s software update page shows all the US carrier versions of the One (M8) still sitting within the Integration stage and all versions (carrier branded, Unlock and Developer Edition) of the HTC One (M7) are still in Development.

It’s disappointing that we all have to wait a little bit longer to use Android 5.0 on our HTC phones, but we’d rather have HTC take a few extra weeks to “ensuring these updates result in an even better experience with your device because that is what the updates are intended to do.”

  1. … as long as I ‘get’ the OTA I’m fine with it. I hear this will be the last update the/my M7 will get so I await with Jedi patience, the Hima Prime *big grin*

  2. Yep, rather HTC delivers a fully baked version of lollipop, than a half-baked brick version.
Kudos to HTC in making sure they get it right!
    Cheers M8 ‘s

  3. My phone is now virtually uselss. The WiFi doesn’t work, Barclays apps, Facebook, Kaspersky & many others following the latest software update. Took ages to update & said was successful. Phone is less than a month old.
