What is the HTC Fetch accessory and how would you use it?

HTC Fetch is a fancy, multi-purpose, digital keychain and companion to several of HTC’s most recent Android and Windows Phone 8 smartphones. The device was announced sometime in the middle of last year and finally hit US store shelves in January 2014. We have been anxious to get our hands on the HTC Fetch to see how useful this type of accessory can be when paired via Bluetooth with our powerful HTC phones. We want to show you multiple uses of the keychain accessory and which phones it will work with. Unlike other primitive products on the market, HTC Fetch does more than just assist in the tracking of itself and what it is hooked to. Do you already have HTC Fetch, but need some help setting it up?

HTC Fetch has four primary functions:

  1. Locate my HTC Fetch; Once paired with your phone, HTC Fetch has a beeping alarm that can be triggered within the Bluetooth settings on your phone and will stop once you have located and pressed the button on your HTC Fetch. This is great for the times you can’t find your keys and HTC Fetch is on your keychain.
  2. Locate my HTC phone (supported models listed below); Pressing the button on HTC Fetch will activate an alarm on your HTC phone until dismissed with the onscreen option on the phone. Have you ever had a time where you asked someone to call your phone, because you can’t find it to hear the ringer and find your phone? HTC Fetch can help you find your phone without the shame in asking someone to call your missing phone. Also, for the times your phone is set to silent HTC Fetch will still sound the alarm loudly, regardless of the level the ringer is set to.
  3. Remote shutter when in camera mode; When in the camera mode on your HTC phone HTC Fetch can be used as a remote trigger for the camera shutter. This feature alone is so invaluable when snapping the ultimate selfie or making your own action shots with HTC Zoe. With HTC Fetch as a remote shutter, one can snap photos with the lens on the front or back of the phone. Trying to close the shutter in a third party camera app does not work with HTC Fetch, but if someone stumbles upon one or some apps that do please let us know.
  4. Find the last location both HTC Fetch and your phone were paired; An advantage to HTC Fetch attached to your keys is that it makes separating your phone from keys very obvious, but say that some unforeseen circumstance pulls you away from one of the paired devices. The HTC Fetch app or rather the Bluetooth settings for HTC Fetch on your phone will save the last location the couple were connected helping you narrow down the search for a happy reunion.

One person recommended I attach HTC Fetch to my child as a means for keeping them close to me in a crowded area or at the playground while I Ingress with the other fathers.

HTC Fetch is the simplest HTC accessory to date to accompany a smartphone yet packs a mighty punch with a handful of features for a mere $30 US dollars. What will you use HTC Fetch for? Do you have any unique ideas that could be made possible with HTC Fetch? What if someone wrote an app using the IR sensor to open the garage door to your home and HTC Fetch could be used in the app to activate the open and close function of the garage?

  1. A few functions that it doesn’t have that would be great.

    1. The ability to disable the separation alarms but retain the ability to use the find feature. I find myself frequently separating at home and work where the alarms are not as critical. If the proximity alert is turned off, the find function is also disabled and the bluetooth connection is lost.

    2. ‘Trusted Device’ … A built-in Moto X like function that allows it to lower security when paired. I don’t have a pebble, but use the functionality in Pebble Locker to simulate it. Unfortunately, it doesn’t work if I have the separation alarm turned off to avoid annoying people at home and office.
