HTC exploring android 4.4 update option for AT&T HTC One X

The HTC One X and One X+ were recently updated to Android 4.2.2, but there was quite a bit of disappointment when owners of the handset learned that the 4.2.2 update would be the last update the handset would receive. The culprit in this case was the fact that the chips inside the devices were no longer being supported by their manufacturer – Nvidia. The HTC One X in the U.S. is running a Qualcomm chip which does support the latest builds of Android, but HTC made a decision to not release the update since owners of the One X+ would probably not take it very well.

To put it simply, the who thing got out of control and HTC handset owners complained… a lot. To rectify the situation, HTC is now reconsidering its decision to abandon the AT&T HTC One X on Android 4.2.2 and is “now actively exploring how we can make the jump to 4.4.”

While HTC has not committed to an AT&T HTC One X Android 4.4 update, the fact that they have acknowledged the issue and are looking at options is 1,000 times better than nothing at all. Unfortunately, owners of the Nvidia powered HTC One X and One X+ are still left with devices that will not be updated past Android 4.2.2

To address an issue that’s top of mind for many folks here, we recently announced that we wouldn’t be updating the HTC One X and One X+ beyond Android 4.2. Without the support of our chip manufacturer Nvidia, it made a global update of One X and X+ devices impossible. However, in US the One X uses the Qualcomm chip and an upgrade would be possible, but we didn’t think it would be a good experience for our customer base to update the X, but not the X+. This update caused a huge stir amongst owners and we’ve heard you loud and clear, so we’re now actively exploring how we can make the jump to 4.4.

  1. This is verryy frustrating my phone is not even two years old and wont get new adnroid beacuse it has a nvidia tegra chip… FU HTC.

  2. Agreed. What’s the point in brand loyalty if HTC are going to screw their existing customers, especially those who thought they were getting a top-of-the-range device when buying the One X+?

  3. They want to force us to buy the newer devices all time, but for example the HTC One is not much off an uppgrade from One X + and in some way it’s a downgrade. I have 64 gigs of storage the one has less. I wanna keep this phone until I can get a real uppgrade but I want the best software on it.

    1. True, but HTC’s hands are tied since Nvidia is no longer supporting the chip. HTC took a risk in using Nvidia and how they are paying the consequences for that. We probably will no see another phone with an Nvidia chip in a very long time.

  4. Alienating customers aren’t u HTC my one x plus is still in warranty but a phone off 37 k would struck to older software
    Shame on HTC
