HTC One Developer Edition skipping 4.2 update since ‘4.3 is so close’

Jason Mackenzie, HTC’s president of global sales, has revealed that the HTC One Developer Edition will not be updated to Android 4.2. The Android 4.2 update will be skipped in favor of the most recent Android 4.3 update which Google released towards the end of July. Mackenzie claims that the Android 4.2 update offered limited customer benefits. While that may be true of the stock Android 4.2 update, the update that HTC has been pushing out to international versions of the HTC One has included quite a few tweaks to Sense 5 which add quite a few improvements.

Since  Jason Mackenzie claims that “4.3 is so close,” we hope those who own the HTC One Developer Edition will not have to wait too much longer for the update. The HTC One Google Play Edition was updated with the stock Android version of 4.3 only 10 days after Google announced the update in late July. Unfortunately, we do not know where things stand with carrier branded versions of the HTC One here in the US. The Verizon HTC One will be running Android 4.2.2 when it launches on August 22, but we’re hoping that the T-Mobile, Sprint and AT&T models will get the same treatment as the Developer Edition and jump straight to Android 4.3 within the next month or two.

Would you rather get Android 4.2 now and wait another 3-6 months for 4.3 or wait just a little bit longer and jump straight to Android 4.3?

  1. Having waited this long, I think I’d much rather wait a bit longer for the 4.3 than take a 4.2 now and then endure the long wait once again.

Then again, having said this, I hope the “bit longer” is no more than a couple of weeks.

    1. Not sure what HTC has in store with 4.3, but the standard 4.3 update from Google comes with OpenGL ES 3.0, Bluetooth Smart (4.0 LE support), improvements to WiDi (wireless display) and restricted user profiles.
