Rumor: HTC will update Snapdragon S4 powered HTC One S to Android 4.2

According to @LlabTooFeR, the HTC One S Android 4.2.2 update with Sense 5 is back on the table. The  HTC One S was originally slated to receive the Android 4.2 update long with the HTC One X, HTC reversed the decision on July 2. No reason was given, but details in @LlabTooFeR’s tweet which calls out the Ville and Ville C2 line up perfectly with information we have received from one of our sources.

A source familiar with the matter has confirmed to us that HTC chose to scrap the Android 4.2 update for the HTC One S due to the Qualcomm S3 HTC One S C2 (Ville C2) variant which was released in Asian and select eastern European markets. According to our source, “Qualcomm has stopped critical software support for the S3, leaving the obligation to update those gnarly pieces of chipset software on OEMs.” Coding the Android 4.2 update with Sense 5 for the S3 variant of the One S would not be impossible, but it would force HTC software engineers to take on an extremely difficult and expensive task which has typically fallen on Qualcomm’s shoulders.

HTC had to weigh the cost and benefits of rolling out the update to both the S3 and S4 variants of the One S. In the end, HTC chose to pull the Android 4.2 update for all HTC One S models in an effort to reduce confusion among consumers who may not know the unique differences between the HTC One S and the HTC One S C2.

If @LlabTooFeR is correct, it wouldn’t be the first time HTC did a 180 and released a software update for a device which was removed from an update list. Back in 2011, HTC caved to consumer outcry after the company announced that the HTC Desire would not receive the Android 2.3 update due to low memory constraints. To solve the issue, the final update that was released was scaled back significantly and did not include many of the stock applications which HTC typically bundled into Sense.

We’re hoping HTC will change its mind and offer the Android 4.2 update for the HTC One S. It certainly will be confusing and frustrating if the HTC One S C2 variant will not receive the update, but there’s no reason half of the HTC One S owners should have to suffer because HTC made a financial decision to save a few extra dollars and source the older S3 processor for a select number of markets in Asian and eastern Europe.

  1. HTC dont save a few extra dollars by using an older S3 processor for some selcted markets, TSMC had problems by enough S4 processors for Qualcomm and because of that Qualcomm couldn’t deliver enough S4 SoCs to HTC.

  2. I think this is among the such a lot important info for me.
And i am glad studying your article. But want to commentary on some general things,
The web site taste is great, the articles is
truly great : D. Excellent job, cheers

  3. HTC Reply “The information about the HTC One S having two different processors is correct, but it still falls under the same model. This means that, no matter what processor, the HTC One S will not receive further Android OS updates and will remain on the current version of Android and HTC Sense.”

  4. HTC REPLY: “One S is currently no plan for update to Android4.2.2 with Sense5.0,

It will maintain the existing version of Android and Sense,
However, please be assured that we still plan update camera and Beats Audio sound optimization for One S.
To provide a good experience to every consumer.”

    WOW, WOW, WOW

  5. HTC themselves were the ones who put the S3 processor in the phone and now they’re not gonna update us? How irresponsible. I bet the CEO of HTC is an adulterous person.

  6. Rumors spread that the htc one s will not get sense 5 and android 4.2. The one s is also a part of the one family and it is capable of sense 5 and android 4.2. They cannot forget the one s because of other high end htc devices. If it is hard for the htc to upgrade the qualcomm s3 devices then only upgrade the qualcomm s4 devices. The global version of the htc one s contains s4 processor and the asian version contains the s3 processor. They can update the global version to the sense 5 and android 4.2.

  7. Yeah, yeah, of course that they should update S4 version…. it has the same, or even better performance than the One mini……
Now I start understandig why HTC is with their finances so bad….. they simply don’t care about their costumers and they are starting to loose most of all for Samsung and Apple….. even for Huawei and Sony…..
Too bad….. I am tottaly disapointed with HTC…. It is my third and my last one HTC device!!!

  8. shame on htc.even sony is releasing android 4.2 update for xperia l.xperia l has only 1 ghz dual core.

  9. I am a HTC one S user.. and I think it should receive updates as it has very good performance and should even be updated to next android and sense versions… and shame on HTC for only giving very few updates to this best model…. many brands like Samsung and Xperia has given many updates to its models and this is laterally disappointing HTC customers and this is leading to downfall of HTC brand… so plz think about all users not only ur high cost Mobile users… sincerely.,

  11. HTC one s should receive sense 5 and android update. it is one of the most lovable device by HTC. and it has got only one update so very disappointing for customers. so in order to attract customers HTC should provide update to one S

  12. HTC one s should be updated it feels very bad to spend more then 20k for a smartphone that becomes outdated after a month or so.

  13. if htc leaves this phone behind they will lose a lot of future customers if you can not count on HTC to update a simple android version and sense ui then not to many people are going to be interested in buying from them again just to be left out in the cold again, this is such a simple upgrade yet they wont do it because they think if its not up graded you will just go out and buy a newer HTC but that is where there flaw is in there strategy lays almost all the leading device manufacturers are updating their phones even the the ones that are 2 to 3 years old so why cantwont HTC follow suit ? because they are pumping out more phones then they can sell this ONE thing has become so old you would think they could come up with a new name for all these phones with the same name ONE lets see v,sv,vx,s.x,xl.x+,mini,max,m7,m8,m8x and so on anyway this is the last ONE for ME !!!
