Rumor: HTC M7 to feature a custom Ultrapixels imaging sensor with three 4.3-megapixel sensor layers

When HTC launched the HTC One series at Mobile World Congress last year, Peter Chou emphasized that they were putting a huge focus on camera technology. While HTC hit the mark by delivering an incredibly fast camera application that was paired with an impressive f2.0 lens, image quality fell a bit short with HTC’s custom ImageSense processing chip.

With the expected unveiling of the HTC M7 just two weeks away, we’re now learning that HTC may be moving away from its ImageSense chip in favor of a new Ultrapixels imaging sensor.  While the HTC M7 is rumored to feature a 13 megapixel camera, Ultrapixels imaging sensor doesn’t capture images like most other cameras do. The Ultrapixels imaging sensor is said to be made up of three 4.3-megapixel sensor layers which intelligently merge all the data to generate an image which is crisper and clearer.

The Ultrapixels imaging sensor is new for HTC, but similar imaging technology has been used by Sigma with its Foveon X3 sensor and Nokia has been blurring the lines of megapixel count for a while with the 808 PureView which captures images at 41 megapixel while the final output is capped at 8 megapixels. The three 4.3-megapixel Ultrapixels imaging sensor layers may add up to 13 megapixels, but it’s highly doubtful that the final image will be viewable at that size.

Do you think Ultrapixels play out as another marketing gimmick or will hit help the HTC M7 get a leg up on its competitors?

  1. HTC will surprise us with this HTC M7 .

Ultra-pixel should not be a marketing plan, and I think there will be many more surprises. ^^

February 19th is coming soon …

  2. I think, it is certainly an interesting concept, and I would like to see what it can actually do, before I say wether I’m excited about it.
