Captain’s Log 2013 – NASA sends Nexus One to Outer Space

HTC has confirmed that it will send a Nexus One into space in 2013 as part of NASA’s PhoneSat program which focuses on creating small, low-cost, nano-satellites.  This test will be the final one after years of rigorous testing including high-altitude balloon rides, extreme vibration tests and entering thermal-vacuum chambers.

The advanced technology present in today’s cell phones such as accelerometers, gyroscopes and GPS receivers aid NASA in development of new satellites.  Even though the Nexus One is considered an “older” model smartphone today, the technology inside is 100 times more than what many current satellites have inside.

HTC hasn’t announce the date for the launch yet, but stay tuned and as soon as we know, we’ll pass on the information.
