Updated: ROM update for the European versions of the Desire S and the Rhyme up for grabs

Updated: ROM update for the European versions of the Desire S and the Rhyme up for grabs

Updated: Sorry folks, my mistake! This is not actual code like developers would use to modify ROM’s with, it is the actual update tool for international customers since an Over The Air (OTA) update is not an option.

It looks like our readers on the other side of the globe can now get their hands on the source code ROM Update Utility (RUU) for the HTC Desire S and the HTC Rhyme thanks to the HTCDev portal, the place where the manufacturer releases kernels to the public.

Available for download is the ROM Update Utility (RUU) files for Android 4.o, otherwise known as Ice Cream Sandwich and gives developers the chance to unpack this code to cook up some useful ROM’s of their own gives owners of these devices the opportunity to manually upgrade their phone to one of the latest versions of Android, Ice Cream Sandwich.

To get the file for your HTC Desire S or HTC Rhyme (international versions), head over to the downloads page on the HTCDev center and select the radial button marked “other” and click the “Find Files” button to reveal the code for these devices. Note: Each file is a little over 400 MB in size so turn off WoW for a few minutes to get your code.

What enhancements would you like to see made to Ice Cream Sandwich on the HTC Desire S or HTC Rhyme? Would you ditch Sense or keep it?

I m sorry but what can I do with my phone source code?I have no idea of those thing’s..is it like s-off mode?and if I use this program my phone insurance will be active if something happens to my phone?(I m sorry for my English)
    Thank you.

    • @George – This code is what you currently have on your phone, but will give developers a chance to see how they can make it better. You will most likely want to wait for some developer to use this code to make improvements that you can apply at a later time, at your own risk since modifying your phone goes beyond the terms of your insurance plan.

So after all I shouldn’t wait for an update toy HTC desire s?That’s what they are saying most likely with that new update..ehh..I was expecting the ICS like crazy but anyway..Thank you Andy.

    • @George – Sorry, but I didn’t properly associate the release of these updates correctly. YOU should download the file for your phone and follow the instructions to get it installed. Doing so will NOT void your warranty and your phone will soon have Ice Cream Sandwich. The article has been updated and I hope it makes a little more sense now. Thanks for your comments and let us know how it works out.

ohh.. Then i will give it a try..Thank you!

“it is the actual update tool for international customers since an Over The Air (OTA) update is not an option”

    Why is that, any idea?

Assuming that that is true and it will never come OTA and I update via this method, if (for whatever reason e.g. reported incompatibility with my car’s blue tooth system) I wanted to change back to the current 2.3.5, would that be in anyway possible?

    • @Nick – I’m not sure why it’s not being pushed out this way, but the carrier is responsible for OTA updates. Given your concern about reverting back to the current OS on your phone I would suggest checking your carriers website or even calling their tech support to see if you can download or if they can send you the RUU for version 2.3.5. You might also check the HTCDev.com portal or HTC support on HTC.com/www/ for more info. I was trying to check into, but the site is acting funny on my PC and on my phone.

      • Nick Wilson

Thanks Andy, I’ll certainly explore each of those avenues though I’m not sure my carrier will have it as I don’t think they had the phone (I bought separately).

My guess as to why… maybe it’s not always stable and they don’t want to risk a torrent of abuse so they put the decision in our hands, our risk…

“While we know many customers are comfortable with their existing software, we also know others want the newest software available … Even though we think the majority of customers will be happiest maintaining their current experience, we felt it was important to give you the choice”

Reading between the lines, i’m getting, “have it if you want it, but you’re better off not to’” Hope I’m wrong.

Was hoping for an OTA, but took the plunge and installed the RUU today (Desire S, O2 UK). Looks great, quick, smooth, so far so good…

Which countries are included? By Desire S is region WWE and by Rhyme WWE and East Europe. Is Slovakia included in this region WWE? Would it work for me? Or should I wait a little bit and see what will happen with this update? Or do you think this is the last thing they did for Desire S users in Europe? thanks…

  7. Dario

Thank you Andy, the update of my rhyme is done succesfully. However some applications don’t work properly. I would be grateful if you could post how to get beck to sense 3.5.
