Will your HTC handset be updated to Android 4.1? Here’s what we think

Update 11.13.12: HTC has announced that phone running on 512 megs of RAM or less will not be updated to Android 4.1. HTC specifically named the HTC Desire C and HTC one V, but other handsets from 2011 will most likely be effected as well.

Last fall we wrote a detailed article, highlighting which HTC device we thought would be updated to Android 4.0. Based on our knowledge of HTC’s handset lineup, the majority of the devices that were on our list have been updated to Ice Cream Sandwich. Now that Google has released the source code for Android 4.1, we thought we’d take another shot at identifying which HTC devices will be getting the Jelly Bean update.

Based on what we’re heard from the development community, any device capable of running android 4.0 should also be able to handle Android 4.1 quite easily. Based on that logic, all HTC devices running Android 4.0 should be updated to Android 4.1. Unfortunately, things aren’t always that simple.  HTC has a business to run and some of the phones that it updated to Android 4.0 are starting to show their age.

HTC phones that should get the Android 4.1 update

If you’ve purchased a new HTC phone within the past twelve months, chances are that your phone will be updated to Jelly Bean.  Our intuition tells us that the first phones in HTC’s lineup to get updated to Android 4.1 will be their One series like the HTC One X, HTC One S, and HTC One V along with the HTC EVO 4G LTE and the HTC DROID Incredible 4G LTE.  These are the latest flagship devices from HTC and have enough processing power and system memory to handle Google’s Android 4.1 update. HTC has already committed to updating the HTC One S and HTC One X to Android 4.1 and we expect an announcement regarding its other flagship devices in the coming weeks.

The second wave of Android 4.1 update will most likely be delivered to HTC’s flagship devices from 2011 which run on dual-core Qualcomm S3 chips. This list includes handsets like the HTC Sensation, HTC Sensation XL, HTC Vivid, HTC Rezound and the HTC Amaze 4G. While most of these phones may seem a little outdated, their internal components are more than capable of handling the Android 4.1 update.

HTC phones that wont get the Android 4.1 update

While Google isn’t setting a limit as to what hardware is required to run Android 4.1, HTC will most likely be setting an arbitrary threshold based on specs, age and popularity of individual handsets. Last time around, we assumed that all HTC phones running on Qualcomm S1 processors would not get updates to Android 4.0 – and we were right. This time, we can safely say that HTC will not be updated any of its devices running on Qualcomm S2 processors, unless they were originally released with Android 4.0.

Check out list below to see if your phone will make the cut and be updated to Android 4.1. Again, we’d like to remind you that this information is based purely off of our knowledge of HTC phones and how HTC has updated their handsets in the past.  We expect HTC to roll out its first Android 4.1 updates this fall, but most device will probably not get a taste of Jelly Bean until late Q4 or even Q1 of 2013. We’ll be sure to keep you up to date on any new details that come our way. What are your predictions? Will your phone be getting Android 4.1?

  1. Have to politely disagree here. I think on the whole, one can expect one OS upgrade per phone, and many of the devices from 2011 have already made the jump from 2.3 to 4.0. However, this included a Sense upgrade to 3.6 only. What would HTC do then if upgrading to Jelly Bean. Make a modified Sense for those? Upgrade all to the new Sense 4.1, reducing the benefit of buying the latest HTC handset?

I think in order to encourage hardware upgrades and also to save precious resources, only 2012 HTC handsets will get the Jelly Bean upgrade.

    1. Most Android phones typically get only 1 update, but HTC has a history of delivery two updates to many of its flagship devices. The G1, Hero, EVO 4G , Desire and Incredible 2/S all received two updates and the HTC Thunderbolt is expected to get its second major update before the end of August. HTC was even planning on updating the HTC Desire HD before it ran into system partition issues.

      1. htc sales are down, htc won’t interest in updating devices than selling a huge shipment of smartphone, i expect that htc will update the one series only.

        1. true, but those who purchased the flagship phones from last year still have 10-12 months before they are eligible to purchase a new device if they want a discount through their carrier.

while many of you who ready this site update your phones quite often, the majority of consumers wait 2-3 years between buying new devices.

          1. That’s right, as a every 2 year upgrader if HTC doesn’t get Jelly Bean to my Vivid I won’t be buying another HTC when my upgrade rolls around in Nov ’13. So if they’re worried about sales, one place they should start is ensuring they retain current customers.

    2. You forget a majority of HTC high-end users are still using pre-One series devices. To not update is to risk losing the user-base once and for all. HTC CEO Peter Chou just announced his wishes for HTC to be less obstructed by internal bureaucracy, in order to improve sales. A step towards this will be releasing software updates as to not leave loyal users behind, and increase brand trust.

    3. I have a harder time being polite about this sort of thing. I have a 6 month old amaze 4g running ICS (now over a year out of date). That’s right, I have a year and a half left paying for a new phone which is OVER A YEAR OUT OF DATE, and which may, or may not, get upgraded to 4.1?!? Forget 4.1, were on 4.21! Its now COMMON for apps to not run on this device due to the OS! IMO it is unforgivable to delay updates for a year, if at all, on your customers’ phones in order to build in frustration and mortality in the devices. “…to save precious resources” this is their BUSINESS! Thats it! what? they make hardware, this is to do with their software bloat and skin? Well, its a poor business decision to make your good hardware irrelevant by insisting on producing software which you then dont want to bother supporting in a reasonable fashion! Personally, for me, there’s a year and a half left of this crap and then I’m all about the Nexus line. No bloat ware, actually GETTING updates, etc.

So, if Im leaving, why am I so upset? why not sftu and go? Because Im locked in for another year and a half, paying for a new, but now obsolete phone! And whats the option? root, rom, spend my days researching and wrestling with bugs on home-grown hacks? HTC made and sold phones in bad faith, actively INSISTING on interfering with free and public updates to its phones, and forcing early obsolescence with short support cycles to the inbuilt software dependencies.

You see a lot of comparisons of this phone to the iphone, etc. What you never see is that the iphone and the nexus actually get the updates, security and features both, where as the rest get left out to rot.

      1. Could not agree more. After my horrible experience with the HTC Amaze and spending a fortune purchasing it only to find it’s lack of support and unstable software…I will never buy an HTC again. Way to go HTC, this is one more disappointed customer.

  2. My phone is those on the list that well not getting the upgrade. Will this effect my phone and if so in which way?

    1. Not getting the Android 4.1 update for your device will not effect your phone at all. Keep in mind that this does not mean HTC will no longer support your phone with future update which address security risks of bug fixes. HTC just recently rolled out minor updates for the T-Mobile G2, myTouch 3G Slide (https://htcsource.com/2012/08/security-updates-for-the-htc-g2-and-htc-mytouch-3g-slide/) and HTC Inspire 4G (https://htcsource.com/2012/07/system-update-for-the-htc-inspire-4g-now-available/) – all phones which were not on HTC’s Android 4.0 update list.

    2. it absolutely will effect your phone. While your phone will likely continue to run any apps you now have just fine, updating those apps, or getting new apps, becomes progressively more difficult. But hey, you have htc sense, and that’s better than a current OS, right?

  3. The list says HTC Sensation XL will get 4.1 update, but it is using S2 (Qualcomm MSM8255) chipset. Do you still think it will be updated to Android 4.1?

    1. The HTC Sensation XL is the exception on our list. The device is less than a year old and was pitched as a premium device, paired with Beats headphones.

      1. HTC Sensation XL has a single core 1.5 GHz Scorpion processor. I think Jelyy Bean will be updated only to dual core processors.

  4. Currently using a White Amaze 4G, I really hope my phone gets some jelly bean lovin, to be quite honest I would be surprised if it didn’t, and I will be totally fine if it is the last major update for my phone as I am saving up for the next nexus regardless of who makes it, but my Amaze I’d the best phone I have owned it still runs like a champ

  5. Hi,
    I’ve a HTC Sensation.
Do you have any idea, based on previous updates schedules, when can I expect an update to Jelly bean?
My phone is quite unstable now, shutting down every time I open Google maps, and I wonder if it doesn’t have to make with this late update not following the apps (Google maps, for instance)?
Best regards and thank you for your updates!

    Amande

    1. Latest Google Maps app is broken, and make reset on any HTC Sensation device. No more info about fix from google.

  6. if it’s true that the htc one v is getting the jelly bean update, how come my one hasn’t been updated? i’ve seen news around that they don’t know if they are going to update it

  7. I love my Vivid, and really hope it gets Jellybean. I think it would make a perfect phone even better.

  8. got a message from one of the htc developers and no words on the htc one v 4.1 update yet. nore they are developing it for the htc one v yet

  9. I want to buy HTC DESIRE V but I’am not sure that it will get a Jelly Bean update. I don’t want my new cell to stuck with ICS.

    1. do not buy a phone that is already out of date, hoping for an update to ANOTHER out of date os. This article is talking about 4.1 jb, not 4.21 jb. for half the price get a phone without HTC sense, SS touchwiz, or any other unnecessary bloat, and youll always be current.

      1. Do you really think people listen to someone like you? Your running down the list of comments just bitching to everyone. Your just acting like a little girl, if your really so mad about this go buy a new damn phone.

        1. Well said Trevor, I couldn’t agree more. I have a HTC Sensation XL running Android 4.0 ICS and im more than happy with it too 🙂

  10. i so love my HTC RAIDER 4G and i will love it more in Jelly bean.. HTC RULES!!!! i think, htc phones deserve to have a jelly bean and sense 4.0 it them.. `so when will be the release of the said updates??is it possible this 2012????

  11. PLs why is my htc. Chacha excluded?my home screen isn’t functioning properly.how do I over come such an issue ?pls email me with the result

  12. First off I’d like to say every phone I’ve purchased through T-Mobilehas been an HTC. My G2 I purchased for $699.00 when it first got introduced. Still have it to this day. Butit stinks knowing its not one of the phones. Getting upgraded to android 4.1. That sucks. Sincerely. HTC DASH OWNER. time to invest in Samsung.

    1. Samsung has the same issues. Slightly more prompt updates, but same thing. In fact, any distributors except for google themselves adds in this junk and it delays their release cycle 6-12 months. Also, it is a ton of work for them to update for all the phones, so they give up quickly, preferring to just sell you a new one instead. Let these companies know that if they arent going to support their own products, we wont buy them. We have better, faster, and cheaper options available which ARE supported (nexus)

      1. Chris, when you buy an Android phone from HTC, Samsung or LG etc The Manufacturers do not have to update the OS from Android 2.2/2.3 to 4.0 or 4.1. Instead of moaning or bitching about Android and HTC get a phone that does not run Android. HTC and Android are simply brilliant, I have had my HTC Sensation XL for 5 months and it runs Android 4.0.1 ICS its brilliant. Im not bothered wether I get 4.1 or 4.2 JB or not.

  13. I’ve owed 6 HTC phones and like them. The Amaze will probably be my last one, I’ll make the return to Nexus phones. It’s not the quality but I prefer the latest software. It’s a $500 personal computer, that’s abandoned after a year! My 3 year $500 laptop still gets updates, for that amount of money so should my phone. It’s not worth it especially when the new nexus costs $299. So thanks HTC for some good phones. P.S make a nexus device.

  14. I have the HTC Vivid, and while in your article you listed it as one getting the Jelly Bean update, it is listed in neither one of those lists that state devices getting it, and devices not getting it. My device is on ICS right now, has 1GB memory and more than enough power, however, no update has been offered. I think we should update this article.

    1. It is if you look again. The HTC vivid and HTC raider are the same phone, I believe raider is the international version? It’s the same deal as the HTC one series (x, v, s…) The raider and vivid (one more I think but I can’t remember) are the htc holiday series.

  15. You don’t see “Vivid” in the list because it is the same device as the “Raider”. Vivid is the Att name while the Raider is branded for other countries. I hope it gets Jellybean. If not hopefully someone on rootzwiki or xda will make a custom Rom based on it.

  16. Just a question, I have htc sensation xe. after upgrading to jellybean, does it also updates the htc sense? When can we expect these upgrades? Thanks nick

  17. HTC sensation and Sensation XE are very good camera phones having dc processors.
kindly announce the official launching of Jelly bean updation to these sets at the very earliest. people are highly anxious to see this. any possibility of improving the on board photo editor similar to the one seen in galaxy S2.
    thank you

  18. The Jump from 3.2 to 4.0 was nice, but not huge, some nice features added. but can a jump from 4.0 to 4.1 be anything significant enough to require actual hardware upgrade to run? Maybe version 5.0 will have printing and advanced editing?

    Bruce

  19. Never ever a German T-Mobile device again!!!!!!
In the meantime every HTC device is running on JB. Except T-Mobile Germany for the HTC One X. I don’t know why they need soooo long – but this sux.

It was anyway my last HTC device!!!!! S-OFF not possible. Never, never, again!

  20. Hi Sir,

I am waiting for the Android4.1(Jelly Bean) for my HTC Sensation XL.
So please let me know when i will get the same.

    Thanks and regards,
    ATUL KUMAR SINGH

  21. I use the Sensation XE with beats audio and indeed is a very lovely and powerful device.

I hope it receives the JB update because the one series are not that different from my phone.

A really huge fan of htc cos of the sense UI. Picked this phone over Samsung’s S3 so I hope I get this update.

  22. I would like to add my two cents to this conversation. I just got an email from HTC regarding the “Incredible” 4g update, where they are telling me they will NOT upgrade that phone to Jelly Bean, and that HTC doesn’t have anything to do with that decision but that it was the “carrier’s”. My answer to that is that it doesn’t makes sense to buy a phone that you can’t upgrade for two years and that by the end of the first year is going to be outdated. That it doesn’t make sense either, that if you have an iPhone, you don’t have those problems. Also, I think that there it constitute an “unfair commercial practice” (agreed or not agreed by contract), to have one company (in this case Apple) to play under different rules, letting us customers without options but to buy iPhones if we want to have an up to date device during the duration of the contract. So, my wild proposal? What if we HTC phone owners decide to create a class action suit against HTC and the Carriers as well? WE have rights too. So, if the updates are available why should I be obligated to buy a new phone to be able to have the updated version of the operating system? Doesn’t it sounds wrong to you? or is it just me?

  23. I don’t get this???? and the Samsung galaxy s2 is rolling out with android jelly bean 4.1.2
    wtf is wrong with HTC!!!
HTC sensation xe is even faster then galaxy s2 and they where both release in May 2011

    1. @Monir: Hi. I had been talking to Htc and with Verizon about this. Mostly because I love my incredible 4g. This is a pointing finger game, between them. HTC says that it is Verizon decision. When I asked Verizon, they told me that it was Google’s decision. I haven’t talked to Google yet, but I bet they will say that they just roll out the upgrade and is HTC’s responsibility to adapt it to their phones. Therefore, we are pretty much on our own having to unlock our phones and using third parties roms. That goes without saying that htc is a very difficult phone to crack and because of that the roms had been “classified” as unstable. That’s why, I am upgrading to samsung galaxy note 2, so if worst come to word, at least there is more options to unlock and live with it and keep them updated. Peace. I feel your pain.

  24. HTC also has a habit of saying one thing and going a completely different direction so I don’t really think the update will be released on phones like the HTC Amaze 4G or any device built around that time but if HTC get a hair up there ass and does do the Update I’ll take all I’ve said about those STUPID FUCKS back.

    1. So, I talked to htc customer service people again. For my surprised, they called me. Well even when they didn’t say it clearly, the between lines were that they had supplied Verizon with the roms for the upgrades of their phones. That it is Verizon’s decision after that what phone is going to be upgraded or not. Also, that it might take months for that process to take place (which I really don’t get… but that’s the way it is structured)… I still believe that this upgrading process should be subject of revision by the Secretary of State in each and every state in this country. The question being, why should we have to spend money in a new device, renewing our contract so we can get the newest version of an operative system? WE as customers have rights too, but it is not until someone gets these issues to the proper authority that things get changed. Like when they didn’t allowed the tethering apps etc… So, there is a simple solution… get the local government involved… it is free and government is so big these days, that Verizon will look like a small company…

  25. I like the sound quality of my HTC Sensation XL but I cant see what use I have of HTC sense and wait almost a year for an upgrade. My next phone will be a pure Google Nexus for sure.

    1. @Varg, I had the same dilemma. My solution was to get a Galaxy Note 2. Why? So I can root it and keep it current. As I had said, before I bought the new phone, I talked to HTC and they told me they had sent the roms to Verizon, and that it was in verizon’s side that it was taking time to “test” it. The problem with HTC phones is that they are very complicated to root so, that also came to play in choosing a galaxy note 2. As you said I loved the sound of my htc incredible 4g, but wouldn’t accept to have an outdated phone because of verizon.

  26. Hi,

I am Praveen Kumar Doddamani. I’ve recently purchased HTC Amaze 4G. It has GB and is unlocked one. I’ve have bought it from Ebay and it has no T-mobie sign on it. It is working fine with my local carrier. So my question is shall i wait for update of Jellybean from company or shall i upgrade it myself as per XDA forums?

  27. kindly tel me that my htc sensation xe can b update to jelybe or nt,
nw it is runing on 4.0.3 android version and htc sense versiob is 3.6
    and software number is 3.33.401.153
kindly tel me can i update to jelybe or nt?
and if yes they hw i can update
    thnks
    Best Regard
    Asad

  28. I have the sensation XL and really would like the
Jelly bean update as android games like FIFA 13 apparently will only run on my phone on jelly bean OS. My phone is currently running 4.0.3

  29. Will my sensation xl get JB or not? Just a simple yes or no, mr nick..

    Post to my email please!

  30. Hi,

I own a HTC amaze. And its Asian version i guess. Will there be a Jelly bean Update for HTC amaze without T mobile logo?

  31. I have a HTC Sensation XL running 4.0.3 ICS and HTC Sense 3.6 and am more than happy with it too. Would like to think that I may be able to upgrade to 4.1 JB but to be honest it really doesn’t bother me. HTC SENSATION XL WITH BEATS AUDIO is awesome 🙂

  32. After a technical problem with my HTC Sensation XL yesterday had to take her back to the shop and was told that there was no more in stock and that it was a discontinued product by HTC….im gutted.
Now have a fantastic Samsung Galaxy S3 running 4.1.2 though and its fantastic…SORRY HTC.

  33. Same question as Kuntjoro. I have a sensation XE and wonder if there is already more news about a possible update. This article its last update dates from 2012, so another update might be good.

  34. I’m confused here! Is there an exact date for the jelly bean release for my htc evo 3D I mean my htc is on the devices that gonna get the 4.1 System if that’s so there is should be a release date right? Why the Mysterious and the delay? If we the htc evo 3D owners will get the update then we demand a release date and please be professionals for god sake when we ask about something we always get just hopes!

  36. After scouring the web for updated information on this, I think it’s safe to say that we HTC Rezound owners are being abandoned, this DESPITE the fact that the Rezound was offered up until only a very few months ago. I have generally been happy with the device. With HTC/Verizon support, not so much. ICS took forever. JB will likely never come. I too have bought my first/last HTC device. Next upgrade is to Apple.

  37. Samsung will never let their consumer to use old OS, they keep up dating..that is why they are number one in the market.maybe that’s is secret of Samsung…

    1. the secret of samsung is that they nmake everything htc had better market share back in 2011 because they released more phones

  38. I owne sensation xe and heard about getting jellybean months ago…emailed htc about when and if sensation xe will get the jellybean, I’ve been told that if the device needs any update to improve, it will get it. So assuming there’s no jellybean for me. Don’t trust htc anymore, they don’t update all devices capable of running the new android version. What they do is releasing new phones with the new os…hey HTC people thats not smart you loosing customers…if no jellybean my next phone will be definatly a samsung

    1. +1

I’ve always loved HTC for almost everything.
But having the newest, the best and most expensive smartphone on the day i bought it, I assumed it will be some kind of main product. Now my wife has some kind of cheapest Samsung at our carrier and it is Android 4.1 already with all the goodies…

I think I’ll switch to Samsung next time (I have got Galaxy Tab 2 already)…

      Fck…

  39. What they do is releasing new phones with the new os…hey HTC people thats not smart you loosing customers…if no jellybean my next phone will be definitely a samsung

  40. This decision is not fare, i have HTC Desire C, with 512 Mb RAM and i can’t get the update but a Samsung Galaxy Mini 2 with 512 Mb RAM canget the update??? Totally unfair…

    1. Samsung do not optimize there software . i have ace 2 with jb 4.1.2 it is slow as hell . and that has 768mb of ram and a crappy 800mhz processor . at lease htc are realistic about there updates !!.. gunna get the desire 816 when it comes out in the uk

  41. When will i get the jelly bean update for my htc evo 3d.. Have been waiting for the update for a very long time..Did they forget avo 3d or are the just trying to test our patience??

    1. I have an HTC Evo 3d too. I searched to see if there were any updates available, and it said there wasn’t. I would like to have the new update! I just found out about it, only to hear that it first came out in early 2013! That is crazy! What is taking sooooo long??!!

  42. Dear Nick, thanks for the information, but will you please update or write a new updated article as some of the devices have been pushed with ICS/JB updates some still remain in GB dark shadows. And can you also mention the fact that HTC hasnt and might not push official updates to International/Asian versions which are factory unlocked or unbranded. My personal interest lies in HTC Amaze (Asian/International version) which is still running on GB 2.3.4. Thank you

  43. HTC Sensation XE phone, still pending or not it has been lost anywhere. Almost one year I waiting for the update. HTC is so late to distribute the update for its clients ? It’s very bad and might give bad impact for HTC market. Please do respond and update it officially when it could be delivered or whether it has been stop !

  44. I’ve been waiting ages now for the HTC sensation 4g jellybean update ..I have heard from some sources that HTC will not be sending out a jellybean for the sensation which I’m not happy about atall..I know its not the newest of handsets but its still a premium device that was once HTCs flagship phone..I’m dissapointed and think my next phone will be a samsung galaxy as they seem to get updates a lot quicker

  45. when htc sensation xe get JB?…zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz……..sayonara HTC….it’s too late !!!

    1. My personal view, irrespective of whether right or wrong is that..rather than RAM, HTC shd also be concerned/ allocate equal weightage to the internal storage capacity of the HTC device before deciding which of the aforesaid models shd be at the receiving end of the JB update hammer!!!
      Guys….do you agree?

  46. when htc sensation xe get the 4.1 update? it’s toooooooooooooooooooooooooooo late guys, working too slow, samsung company is faster….

  47. i have sensation xe, i hope the JB will really go to my SXE. rumors says HTC won’t update it to JB, i don’t know where is the true. because till now i didn’t hear any information form HTC itself.

I think, why HTC didn’t update the JB for old phone because the hardware problem, and the htc sense that might be good but heavy using RAM, even the handset has been JB but may be it will make the handset become little laggy because the htc sense.

  48. Dear HTC,
How can I get my lovely htc desire vc
Upgrading to Jelly bean. Please send me details

  49. I will never buy htc phones again..n recomend others not to buy too….its been over an year still no update on my desire v…samsung updates their os every 3 or 4 months….i will b changing my phone soon. Htc sells their products n forgets abt it tht their old customers needs updates

  50. i have HTC Sensation XE and very soon i am going to sell it due to not giving update for jellybean and i will buy Samsung MObile , atleast they give updates to their customer and i will not recommand HTC to anyone and in future i will buy any device of HTC

  51. it seems that sensation xe would never get jb. sucks! this is the last time i’m using htc!
