Security Updates for the HTC G2 and HTC myTouch 3G Slide

We have some good news and bad news for owners of the HTC G2 or HTC myTouch 3G Slide. HTC is offering a new update for these models, and the contents may or not mean much to you. So let’s get the bad news out of the way so we can focus on the good news longer.

The bad:

At this time, HTC does not have Android – Ice Cream Sandwich or Jelly Bean available for these devices. It is hard to say whether or not these devices will see either of these official OS updates, despite how popular physical keyboards are amongst the community and how popular the HTC G2 is. With the pace that HTC is releasing updates for its more current phones chances are slim that these two models will see a major OS update.

The good:

If you are the owner of one of these devices, you should rejoice a little knowing that after you download and install this update your phone will be more secure than before. The details of the update are pretty vague, but according to T-Mobile’s support page for the HTC myTouch 3G Slide, included software enhances security and improves software stability.

To apply the update one must first go to HTC’s website and download the 160 MB file and also be sure to grab the latest tethering driver, dated 11 JAN 2012. Once you have the tools you need, proceed to T-Mobile’s support page to follow their step-by-step directions for completing the process. Be advised, all user data will be erased when the update is applied so be sure to take the necessary steps to back up your personal information. Anything left on the SD card will be untouched, but for safety reason we recommend removing the card from the phone.
