HTC has decided to purchase S3 despite initial setback
Last year we reported that HTC was going to purchase S3 to boost its’ patent portfolio. However, in November of 2011, HTC changed course and decided that it would hold off on it’s decision to acquire the S3 patents. Grace Lei, general counsel for HTC, recent stated: “We think S3′s patent portfolio is valid and strong, and we have decided to complete the purchase after cautious assessment.”
The cost of this acquisition is listed as $300 million, but the investment is minor compared to the value gained by removing the need to outsource the graphics chips for future devices.
