How to SIM unlock the AT&T HTC One X for free

Buying a new phone like the HTC One X can be exciting, but what happens if you want to take your device with you to another service provider? If you purchased an unlocked international phone, you can pop in any SIM card you want and go about your business, but things get a little tricky when you purchased your HTC One X from AT&T since the handset is locked down and is not able to make calls when using a SIM card from any other service provider.

Fortunately, there are multiple solutions. If you’re willing to pay, you can get a SIM unlock code for the HTC One X for only $12.95. But we have a better solution. If you want to unlock your AT&T branded HTC One X without spending a dime, call AT&T customer service they will email you your HTC One X unlock code. The only catch is that you must have an account in good standing (60 days of active service with a pre-paid account).

In order to SIM unlock your AT&T HTC One X, you must have your IMEI number and a microSIM card from another service provider.

Obtain your HTC One X SIM unlock code from AT&T
  1. Locate your handset IMEI number within Settings > About Phone > Phone Identity > IMEI
  2. Write down your IMEI number
  3. Call AT&T customer service at 1-800-331-0500 or 611 from your HTC One X
  4. Ask customer service for the SIM unlock code for your HTC One X
  5. Customer service will ask for your IMEI number and will fill out a request form. Once the SIM unlock code request form is processed, the code will be emailed to you (typically 1-3 days later)
SIM unlock the AT&T HTC One X

  3. Insert a microSIM card from another service provider and turn the HTC One X back on
  4. When prompted, enter SIM unlock code provided by AT&T
  5. Enjoy your HTC One X on any GSM carrier of your choice.

  1. This is not true. I called AT&T and they said that since this is a new phone for them, the unlock code will not be available until November of 2014

  2. Also called AT&T and they told me this phone is an exclusive and no unlock code exists.
Funny enough, my HOX does not have an unlock code even from ebay resellers

  3. You have to tell At&t that you know it has an unlock code and if they claim you have to wait until whenever, tell them you want to be transferred to a supervisor, because they are out right lying to you. Period. They have the unlock code, you just have to demand it.

  4. What if I unlock an, on contract, att one x? Will I be able to use the phone while in Europe with an EU SIM and then when I am back in the states simply be able to put my att SIM back in?

      1. called ATT today. Told them I couldn’t afford international roaming fees and would like the unlock code for HTC OneX. The guy filled out a request form, submitted it and I someone sent me an email within an hour with my unlock code. Now to see if it works.
If it does work, and I use my phone in Europa for a month, I can simply pop my att sim back in when I return stateside?

  5. Just called they gave me the unlock code over the phone you just have to get lucky with the person who answers the phone, be upfront tell them exactly what you want and be confident. I dont even have an AT&T account, had the code in 5 minutes.

  6. If I have a HTC One X and its been lost, stolen or a deliquent account, can it be unlocked for another carrier service. If so which carriers are they. Thanks.

    1. Any GSM Carrier T-mobile, Sprint, Some smaller SIM Based ones In US, But Verizon is CDMA So it won’t work correctly/At all.
In EU Most carriers are GSM So any one should work, As long as you buy a Micro SIM.

  7. I have never had a problem getting an unlock code from AT&T for any phone. This time was probably the easiest. I just called and asked for it. If you run into any problems, just say you will be traveling overseas and can’t afford international roaming while you are gone.

    1. That’s interesting since my cousin just bought and unlocked an AT&T iPhone 5 without any trouble getting the code from them…

    2. Read.

You can read the full docket here but, in short, it is illegal to unlock a phone from a carrier unless you have that carrier’s permission to do so.

  8. called AT&T yesterday got the unlock code for my galaxy note with no problem but my wifes one x cant be unlocked for 10 more days. Theu told me you have to have it for 90 days then it will be no problem

  9. “You can read the full docket here but, in short, it is illegal to unlock a phone from a carrier unless you have that carrier’s permission to do so.” If you get an unlock code from AT&T, it is very likely that you have carrier’s permission to unlock the phone.

  10. Called ATT, gave them my number, which is currently off right now, gave them my IMEI number, and she gave me the unlock code. In less than 5 minutes… thanks…

  11. Just called AT&T and got the code no problem. They told me I had to have the phone for the 2 year agreement(about a year to go), I replied that I needed it for vacation and they promptly gave me the code.

  12. I bought a 1X from my daughter who got it on a 2 yr. contract from AT&T. When I put a $25./mo pay as you go phone plan on it they refused to allow me a data plan saying the phone doesn’t qualify for data. Is there a way around this, and if not, what carrier would accept the phone and allow for a data plan if I unlock it?

  17. Sooo… I unlocked it and it won’t even connect to a Network. I went to Settings and Networks and chose the network I wanted to connect to and sometimes it says it isn’t available and sometimes it just doesn’t do anything and my phone still doesn’t work.
