Thin is in – HTC scrapped plans for phone with 3,000 mAh battery based on consumer research

While HTC does an amazing job of listening to its customers, it’s impossible to create a phone which meets the needs of every consumer. This point was highlighted yesterday by HTC’s VP of portfolio strategy, Bjorn Kilburn, at the HTC Frequencies conference in Seattle. Bjorn Kilburn mentioned that consumer research conducted in 2011 suggested that there was a higher preference for slim devices than there was for higher capacity batteries.

As a result of this research, HTC scrapped plans to produce phones with would have featured 3,000 mAh batteries and favor of phones with slimmer designs. In order to create the slimmest devices possible, design decisions forced eliminated user removable batteries.

We are not sure if HTC made the right decision by choosing to produce slim devices over adding extra battery capacity, but we have heard very few battery related complaints about the HTC one X, HTC one S or HTC One V. We’re not sure what the future holds, but we do hope HTC does eventually produce phones with much larger batteries without compromising too much on the aesthetics of their handsets.

  1. Perhaps they feel that they can manage the battery issue with software upgrades. Didn’t you post someting earlier this week about new software upgrade offering 40% longer battery on the One X. That would be impressive if true!

  2. Yes HTC, we prefer a slim phone to fit better in our pockets when the battery runs out. Silly statement HTC, SILLY. You build a monster, faster, with a zillion of apps and tools but we can use only when connected to power charger. Didi you know we have tablets, laptops, desktops? I don’t need a super phone to browse internet at home. Did you know that for you HTC a better strategy would be to make your users to have your product in hands the most time as possible and not inside the pocket. I guess you need to go out there and RESEARCH. Fire your Marketing guy because he is nuts. Yes slim. Wait, I guess I am not buying a 4 hours fly phone anytime soon.

  3. I would really prefer a thick phone with a better battery. A better battery is especially important on devices with huge screens, such as the One X.

  4. Zach,

well then they need to carry on the power connector because this shit lasts no more than 4 hours.

  5. People don’t want to talk on bricks till the phones look like bricks. We are not talking about samsung smartphones which actually look like bricks. HTC designs such beautiful phones that even their thicker phones will look gorgeus. So it is OK for HTC to make thick phones as far is it benefits the battery life of the phone because even though the phone is thick it will be gorgeous.
