Rumor: Verizon roadmap hints at possible HTC Note “phablet”

This year could be pivotal for HTC and it looks like they may have another trick up their sleeve to help them turn around their decline in profits.

Rumor has it that a Verizon roadmap for 2012 shows an HTC crossover device with a 5-inch 1080p display set to ship later this year.  Apparently, it will ship with HTC Sense 5.0, a quad-core Krait CPU, an Adreno 320 GPU and an HTC Scribe pen.   If all these specs come to fruition, HTC could definitely have a strong competitor to challenge the Samsung Galaxy Note.

Stepping back from my excitement of such a device, I want to discuss two items that I find a little suspect about this rumor.  The statement that it will ship with Sense 5.0 puzzles me.  What happened to Sense 4.5 or any other iteration between 4.0 and 5.0?  We saw Sense 3.5 and 3.6, so why would HTC take the huge step straight to 5.0 from 4.0.   My suspicion is that this new handset will likely ship with the aforementioned Sense 4.5 or whatever numerical value HTC decides to grant its next version of Sense.

The second suspect item in the rumor is the 1080p 5-inch display. While we all love high-resolution displays, cramming that many pixels into a 5-inch display would result in 440 ppi (pixel per inch) which is 35% more than the 326 ppi of the iPhone 4. Yes, 1080p displays that small have been around for about a year now, but why would anyone use a 1080p display that small when 35% of the pixels would be virtually invisible to the human eye?

Are you interested in a possible “HTC Note” or does that 5-inch size detract you from purchasing?  Let us know your thoughts.

  1. If HTC came out with a solid 5″ phone, I’d be all over that like white on rice. I love large screens, and I love HTC… the two together would be great.

  2. If Verizon is going to pass on the Samsung Galaxy Note, I’d be willing to get this device. I like my Iphone 4 but its time to go back to Android. I really want somthing with a 5″ screen, my pc never gets used.

  3. Having purchased a HTC Flyer recently, I love it, and anything that would encourage more apps being written to make use of HTC Scribe pen would be great (Papyrus is brilliant). So therefore any new tablet with pen device from HTC can’t come soon enough.

  4. “why would anyone use a 1080p display that small when 35% of the pixels would be virtually invisible to the human eye?”

hahahahahahaha are you on crack mate?

  5. it needs a SAMOLED + screen … LCDs just aren’t getting it anymore, especially w/ the weak black levels

  6. I am eagerly waiting for this device !! A 5 inch smartphone ( or Phablet, as many say ) from HTC would be a treat to watch as it would be good-looking !! I hope they give more storage in it and come with 2 GB RAM !!!

  7. I hate htc because of horrible customer service that left me saddled with piece of junk phone for two years.I swore never again would I buy an htc device, so for me its no, I’ve got two flawless spectacular samsung products that rock, I’d buy the note the second I could get my hands on it and have my fingers crossed hoping the htc rumors are wrong
