NVIDIA hints at a Tegra 3 powered HTC phone for Mobile World Congress

HTC didn’t make much of appearance at CES this year, but we did spend some quality time talking to the buys from NVIDIA and Qualcomm to see if we could dig up anything new on the phones HTC is expected to unveil at Mobile World Congress next month. Qualcomm’s people were not very talkative, but it’s no secret that HTC will be launching new devices powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon S4 processor.

Since HTC has been using Qualcomm chips in all of their Android and WIndows Phone devices for quite some time, we naturally had a hard time believing the rumors that HTC would team up with NVIDIA to deliver a Tegra 3 powered handset at Mobile World Congress. We made several stops at NVIDIA’s booth while at CES last week to see if we could dig up any information on the HTC Edge (the handset rumored to run on a Tegra 3 chip). As you might expect, NVIDIA’s people were pretty tight-lipped about any new devices that have not year been announced, but I did manage to get someone admit that HTC fans may soon have the option of purchasing a Tegra 3 powered phone. He wouldn’t reveal the handset’s name of exactly when it would be released, but he did say that HTC consumers would be very happy once they see the device.

while NVIDIA may still be new to the mobile segment, the company has proven that their years of experience in the computer industry has given them an edge in mobile graphics processing. Qualcomm chips offer a much more rounded approach since they integrate every radio known to man in a single chip, but we all know that Snapdragon processors have not been able to keep up with Tegra chips when it comes down to raw processing power. We’ll just have to wait a few more weeks to actually see how HTC’s Snapdragon S4 phones stack up against their Tegra 3 powered counterparts.
