HTC HD2 dev teams get Android 4.0 up and running.

While many of us are enjoying our dual-core phones, patiently waiting for HTC and the development community to bring Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) to our phones, HTC HD2 owners can already enjoy Google’s latest Android dessert. The HTC HD2 launched a little over two years ago, powered by Windows Mobile 6.5, but it has proven to be one of the most hackable phones ever made by HTC.  The massive development community for the HTC HD2 has been able to port Windows Phone 7, Ubuntu, MeeGo and multiple versions of Android to the device.

The Ice Cream Sandwich AOSP build for the HTC HD2 is usable, but there are a few kinks to work out before we would recommend it to the general public. USB mass storage, camera and hardware acceleration are still being worked on and there are issues with getting the Android Market running without modifying the build.prop. Since the source code for Android 4.0 has only been available since last week, we expect the dev team working on the build to have most of these kinks worked out in the next week or two.

HTC has promised to bring Android 4.0 to as many handsets as possible and has also announced the first wave of Android 4.0 updates should be available in early 2012. If you really want Android 4.0 on your current HTC device before HTC rolls out an official build with HTC Sense, we suggest you keep an eye on your phone’s development thread on XDA-Developers.

Are you going to wait for an official HTC update for your phone or will you take matters into your own hands and flash the first available ICS build that the dev community whips up for your device?
