Earlier this week, HTC made a startling announcement, revealing that they had scrapped their Gingerbread (Android 2.3) update plans for the HTC Desire due to the handset’s memory limitations. The news came as a shock to most HTC Desire owners since HTC promised that the entire Desire family of phones would be updated to Android 2.3 this summer. Naturally, HTC customers voiced their opinions on HTC’s Facebook page and made it clear that they were not too pleased with HTC’s decision to leave the Desire on Froyo.
After a few days of bad press and dealing with the public outcry, HTC has changed their stance on the Gingerbread update. In order to get around the HTC Desire’s 512 MB ROM limitations, HTC will be stripping out a few applications from the new Gingerbread build.
To resolve Desire’s memory issue and enable the upgrade to Gingerbread, we will cut select apps from the release. Look for status updates starting next week. We apologize for any confusion.
We don’t know exactly what HTC will be stripping out of HTC Sense or the Gingerbread build in order to make things work, but we’d suggest unbundling apps like Google Maps, Adobe Reader, Stocks, or even cutting down the number of clock widgets within HTC Sense (how many people really use those huge 4×3 clocks that take up your entire screen?).
HTC plans on pushing out the Gingerbread update next week (probably starting in the UK), but keep in mind that this probably only applies to unbranded version of the phone. Anyone who’s purchased a carrier branded HTC desire will probably be waiting a little longer.

HTC starts tu suck like most tech companies.
I was impressed by the Desire during the Mac anthenna gate.
Bought the HTC and after one year using it I fell like made a mistake.
Desire has poor call volume, not great battery life, NO software to sincronize with PC (at least one that works 100%) and noe these limitations to expand software.
On the other hand I seem my happy IPHONE friends with much great hardware, better picture and screen quality, battery life, playlists, etc, etc.
Apple will deserve my next try!

Go for Apple, my friend. Sure, iPhone is good peace of hardware. It is their software that sucks. If you like to be in jail and to have Jobs as your prisongard, it`s fine with iPhone. Soon you will have iOS 5 and it will probably slow down your iPhone 4 so mutch that you will have to buy a new phone and if you want to reinstall prev. IOS, Apple won`t let you…..
