Dude, Where’s My Update? Anomaly

Dude, WIMU, is an application for Windows Phone, that was born out of frustration, like many of us WP users, the developer wanted a way to keep track of when his update would roll out. In the dev’s own words

If you are like me, you are desperately waiting for your phone update. Hmmm… Cut & Paste, faster loading times and more….
Dude, where is my update?
Tired of waiting for your windows phone 7 update? Want to know the status of the update for your specific location, phone company and device? Well, then download DWIMU and keep an eye out for the coming updates

The beauty of this app was a quick heads up as to where your mobile carrier, was in the update process. More importantly though, the app compiles stats from users devices, what device, what OS version, and this is where the anomaly appears. Of the 10,891 users globally of the app, it appears that 49 are running a version of Windows phone that is not like the known versions, that is other than 7.0.70392, the most current update. Dude WIMU offers stats for your specific device, local Windows Phone users and Global Windows Phone users. So of 501 people using the app in Australia, there are 8 people using a version of WP other than 7.0.7003, 7004, 7008, 7389, 7390 and 7392. So in the stats for my HTC HD7 [T9292], there is one user who is running a version that may bean early build of the next update, codenamed Mango, 7.10.7605.

Considering the amount of angst a lot of users have gone through, waiting for carrier testing, and approval of the NoDo update, it sort of leaves a bad feeling knowing that there is a major updated build of Windows Phone Seven already in the wild. With the update for Samsung devices still on hold [read the comments on the post from the link], and looking at the version disparity over a small cross section of WP users displayed in Dude,WIMU, it starts to look like Android is not the only mobile OS suffering from fragmentation.

dudeI’m pretty sure that Microsoft envisaged, a fluid process, with their current OS release, supported by all the current hardware available, and it also being backward compatible, when New devices, specifically from Nokia, debut later this year with RTM Windows Phone 7.5 [what should be Mango]. What I would suggest is that all WP users install this free application, and keep abreast of the real update scenario for the OS.
