Update: Gingerbread coming to HTC’s Desire family by early summer

Word on the street is that HTC will be rolling out the Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) update to the HTC Desire family shortly after the new HTC Desire S goes on sale.  According to CNET, they were able to coerce an HTC rep at Mobile World Congress revealed that the Android 2.3 update would be rolled out to the HTC Desire, HTC Desire HD and HTC Desire Z 1-2 months after the HTC Desire S makes its retail debut in mid Q2 of 2011.  If we do that math, that should put the Gingerbread update for the Desire family of phones somewhere between June and August, over six months after Google’s release of Android 2.3.

The HTC rep mentioned that the HTC Desire HD and HTC Desire Z would see the Android 2.3 update before it hit the original HTC Desire.  Unfortunately, nothing was mentioned in regards to the Gingerbread update for the T-Mobile G2 which launched in the U.S. market last fall.  Many are hoping that the T-Mobile G2 will receive Android 2.3 before HTC Sense enabled handsets since the phone is essentially running stock Android with a few tweaks from T-Mobile.

Since the HTC EVO 4G, HTC Inspire 4G, and the upcoming HTC Thunderbolt essentially fall into the same category as the Desire family, don’t expect any Gingerbread goodness to roll out to any of these phones any time soon.

UPDATE: The HTC Desire S has just received a launch date!  Both Expansys and Amazon UK are now listing the HTC Desire S with a launch date of April 18th.  This means we could see the Android 2.3 update for the HTC Desire family as early as May!

  1. Thats good news. Hopefully the carriers can pick up their feet and get it in to the customers hands before christmas *rolls eyes*

  2. I will definitely be getting a Google branded product after having to wait such extended periods for Android Updates on my HTC Desire. Every attempt at getting information from HTC about the time-frames for releasing these updates has been futile.

  3. What? This article makes no sense… “Gingerbread coming to Desire family” then later “Since Inspire4G (etc) are in the Desire family.. don’t expect gingerbread.” WHAT? WHICH IS IT?
