HTC Surround slides audio to the front

Media junkies will soon have a new device to ogle over.  The newly announced HTC Surround is probably one of the more unique devices we have seen from HTC is quite some time.  The HTC Surround features a one of a kind slide-out Yamaha stereo speaker system with Dolby Mobile and SRS surround sound technology.  The speaker system, paired with the hidden kick-stand will certainly make the HTC Surround one of the best handsets for mobile media.  The handset features a large 3.8 inch capacitive WVGA (480 x 800 resolution) display, 1GHz processor, 512 MB of ROM, 576 MB of RAM, and 8BG of internal storage for movies, music, and any other media you might want to carry around with you.  The HTC Surround measures in at 119.5 X 61.5 X 12.97 mm and weighs 165 grams.

Expect to see the HTC Surround show up at At&t (U.S.) and Telus (Canada) retail locations around the middle of November. For now, it looks like the HTC Surround will only be shipping in North America.  European and Asian customers will have to settle for the other four Windows Phone 7 handsets coming from HTC.

The HTC product page indicates that the Surround has 16GB internal storage. Granted there are many news sources that indicate 8GB. I’ll be optimistic and assume HTC is not lying to us on their website.

  2. Thanks for the note Ron. The specs listed on the article are pulled from the handset details sheets that HTC emailed up directly. Numbers get mixed up all the time, but we’re hoping we can get to the bottom of this. I’ve emailed a few of my contacts at HTC and I’m hoping they can give me an answer soon.

Also, the specs I got were for the U.S version of the HTC 7 Surround. The handset is also launching in Canada and may feature slightly different specs.

Thanks Nick, that explains the disparity. I’m sure the coming weeks will sort it all out. I can keep my fingers crossed that the 16 ends up in the US, but I suppose I should not bet my house on it.

What I really want to see in the coming weeks are actual reviews instead of the ‘first impressions’ we’ve all seen. I’m on AT&T and if I decide to go with WP7, this is likely the winning phone for me. The proof will be in the pudding though.

Stop me if I’m being annoying…..

On AT&T’s website for the new phones, this bullet appears under the Surround:

    • 16 GB internal storage for all your applications

    So there’s hope.
