Updated: HTC unveils the HTC Desire Z

It’s no surprise that HTC unveiled the HTC Desire Z at today’s press event in London.  Like the T-Mobile bound G2, the HTC Desire Z will be the first handset to feature the new Qualcomm MSM7230 clocked at 800MHz which should make it this phone the most powerful device in HTC’s Android lineup.  The new HTC Sense will allow users to edit video and image files on the fly that are captured with the Desire Z’s 5MP camera with LED flash.  HTC’s new htcsense.com feature now allows users to manage their content on their devices remotely.  If you happen to lose your phone, the service will allow users to remotely locate, lock wipe, or even forward phone calls or text messages.  And for those who seem to misplace their handset in the house, you’ll now be able to make the phone ring loudly even if the handset is set to silent of vibrate.

The HTC Desire Z will be launching in European and Asian markets in October and should make its way to North America (presumably Canada) later in the year.  As always, pricing for the HTC Desire Z will be determined by your carrier of choice.  We’ll be updating the post with a few more pictures once HTC finally makes them public.

UPDATE: we’re still working on getting the official press shots of the HTC Desire Z, but we were able to dig up a few hidden images on HTC’s website.  Enjoy!

  1. @Oliver yes, the origina HTC Desire and the Nexus One do have a 1GHz, but it is a first generation Qualcomm QSD8250 processor with a GPU capable of 22M triangles/sec and 133M 3D pixels/sec.

    The Desire Z and G2 have a 800MHz MSM 7230 capable of 41M triangles/sec and 245M 3D pixels/sec and dedicated 3D/2D acceleration engines for Open GLES 2.0 and Open VG 1.1 acceleration.

The CPU clock speed may be lower, but the MSM 7230 processor is a lot more powerful and less power hungry. It should allow users to play the best 3D games available for Android and increase batter performance at the same time.

  2. Thank you for this information! What about the Desire’s AMOLED? There seems to be confusion, too, concerning the “Z” which I think does have a different display as well.

  3. @Oliver The Desire Z will features SONY’s Super TFT LCD display. HTC has started using this technology on the HTC Desire over the past month or so. Super LCD has many of the same advantages as AMOLED, though it performs a lot better in direct sunlight.

  4. @ Nick: Sounds like you are really good informed. As you wrote, the “Desire Z” is a lot more powerful than the original “Desire”. But how big is the difference between the “Desire Z” and the “Desire HD”, which also is using a new generation of Qualcomm?

    1. We’ll have to wait for the benchmarks to see what the real difference between the two new phones will be. The Desire HD should easily outperform the Desire Z by 20-30%, but keep in mind that there are really no current games or applications on the market that can take full advantage of all that GPU power. If you’re looking for a phone that will last you 2-3 years and keep up with future application development, the Desire HD is definitely the right way to go. Just keep in mind that the Desire Z is still a very viable option and will probably be the best QWERTY equipped Android phone for a while.
