HTC cloning hardware for Android and Windows Mobile

HTC has been working on refining its hardware and software combination for a long time. Most people have notices that all of HTC’s phones sport a 528 MHz processor, but HTC is taking to the next level with the official introduction of the HTC Tattoo today. The most notable spec of the new Android powered Tattoo is that it will be the first HTC Android phone will a 2.8 inch resistive touch screen. When most people hear "resistive screen" they think Windows Mobile. So why would HTC opt for a resistive screen as opposed to the capacitive screen we have seen on HTC’s other Android phones? According to their twitter feed, @HTC indicated that a 2.8" resistive screen is easier to use than a 2.8" capacitive screen. Not having used a capacitive screen that small, I can not vouch for the claim, cut the logic seems to be present. But the screen of the HTC Tattoo is what led me do to a little spec comparison to other HTC phones. The Tattoo lines up pretty nicely with the Hero, Magic, and Dream, but I was astounded to see that the HTC is nearly identical to its Windows Mobile brother.

HTC launched the Touch Cruise in May with a Qualcomm® MSM7225™, 528 MHz, 512 MB of ROM, 256 MB of RAM, 2.8" TFT-LCD with QVGA resolution, 1100 mAh battery, and a 3.2MP camera. Some nice specs for a WM phone, but then last week HTC announced the Touch2 with a Qualcomm® MSM7225™, 528 MHz, 512 MB of ROM, 256 MB of RAM, 2.8" TFT-LCD with QVGA resolution, 1100 mAh battery, and a 3.2MP camera. The same exact specs as the Touch Cruise. And now today, the HTC Tattoo comes to lights with the same exact specs. Coincidence?

It’s hard to say why this mixture of specs is so popular with HTC’s hardware developers. One thing I know for sure if that using the hardware in multiple devices, HTC ensures that they are getting the best deals from their suppliers. Both HTC and Apple sell millions of handsets, but the difference is, HTC has a broad product line while Apple only has the iPhone. We all know that the more you buy of something, the cheaper it is.

You might think that HTC is simply cloning handsets, giving them difference names and shipping them out. if this is the case, don’t feel cheated. It simply makes the handsets a little more compatible with each other. Having standard specs makes things a little easier to program for, fix, and hack. The Tattoo, Touch Cruise, and Touch2 have everything in common except their operating system. Once xda-developers get their hands the Tattoo and Touch2, there should be little to stop them from porting WM 6.5 and Android to all three of the phones.

Let the hacking begin.
