HTC Sapphire undergoing T-Mobile market testing for a new name

It would seem that T-Mobile is testing the waters to find the best name for the HTC Sapphire. TmoNews has uncovered some market research material that indicated T-Mobile might not be happy to simply call their next Android handset the T-mobile G2. Some of the names being tested are "T-Mobile Genius 3G with Google" and "Prism 3G with Google" and even "T-Mobile G3". That last one leaves us a little perplexed. Why skip a number?

If T-Mobile is looking for a new name, I’m sure some of you might be able to come up with some better ideas than "Prism". What would you call T-Mobile’s second Android handset?

I’m sure that T-mobile is simply doing their homework here. I can’t really imagine they have any plans on going away from the "G" branding for their Android based phones. Over lunch today, I strolled over the the T-mobile store in the IDS tower in Minneapolis. The sales reps there know me pretty well since I’m constantly in there quizzing them on all the new hardware they get it. I hinted that T-Mobile was shopping around for a new name for their next Android phone and they seemed quite shocked. At first they didn’t want to believe me, but they knew I had the proof. They both seemed to agree that the G1 had been branded pretty well and most people coming in looking to buy the phone already knew it by name or called it the Google phone. They said it would not make sense for T-Mobile to change branding now and I completely agree.

Make no mistake, when the HTC Sapphire hits T-Mobile retail locations across the country this summer, it will be sporting a G. We’re just not sure what number will be following it
